Easter Sunday and Ireland in the quarter-finals! Singapore elected to bat and staggered to 110 in 46.5 overs. Ireland reached 113 for no wicket in 10.2 overs. The rush to win was in case USA beat Kenya on the same day. This would have created a three way tie at the top of the section and Ireland's run rate was the worst of the three starting the day. Kenya made 243 against USA and calculations showed that if USA won off the last ball of the match then Ireland would have to win against Singapore in about 10 overs. USA were bowled out for 32! An academic calculation showed that if USA had won off the last ball the Irish chase had probably occupied one ball too many!

This was a very hot day and the pitch was quite quick. Ireland made three changes, McCrum for Eagleson, Graham (his first match) for Molins and Andrew Patterson for Rutherford (to improve the batting). Singapore won the toss and batted.

In contrast to previous matches Ireland quicker bowlers bowled 36 of the 46.5 overs bowled. The pitch was faster and this was an attempt to get the faster bowlers into form. However, Mark Patterson continued to bowl wides, nine in his 10 overs. In all, the 29 extras was Singapore's second top scorer.

Patterson took a wicket in each of his first three overs. The first was lbw on the back foot while trying to turn the ball to leg. The second and third were caught at the wicket, one having a wild swish, the other a wild slash. In between the number three faced five balls and retired hurt. Nine were taken off Patterson's fourth over which included a wide and four leg byes. In 12 overs 30 was up and Patterson (3-17) was rested. McCrum struck in his second over when Gunningham (three in 37 balls!) was caught at first slip (by Benson, who else?) attempting to drive. Gunningham and Wilson had put on 29, the best stand of the innings. Graham had his first bowl for the 19th over replacing Gillespie (nine overs for 18). It was McCrum who took the fifth wicket, Stone being lbw trying to pull. At 25 overs Singapore were 53-5.

Graham gave up eight runs in his sixth over but also took a wicket. Wilson (31 in 79 balls) mistimed a drive and was caught at mid-on. 63-6-31. McCrum bowled nine overs, five maidens and took 2-11. Patterson came back for him and Doak replaced Graham. The next wicket fell at 80 in a Patterson over, the 34th. The non-striker charged, the striker was unmoved and the run out was at the bowler's end. Doak joined the wicket takers at 89. Martens was bowled round his legs trying to sweep. His replacement, Prasad, was out in Doak's next over, he missed and was stumped. Now the injured number three, Deshpande, returned. Batting one-handed he held out with Chelvathurai (23*) for more than five overs. They put 100 up in over 43. Harrison bowled three maidens and had a catch dropped by Andrew Patterson. Curry was called up and did the business. The injured Deshpande was caught in Curry's second over.

Five bowlers shared the wickets but Mark Patterson's early strikes caused the collapse. The Irish assault began in the second over after Andrew Patterson had hit a four in the first. Curry savaged Martens for 22 including two successive fours and two successive sixes. Then Patterson took 10 off Wilson. The unfortunate Martens' second and last over went for 16, 11 of them to Curry. Curry hit another six in Wilson's fourth over and two more in Mohamed's second. This was the eighth over of the innings and Curry's first six in this over took him to 52 out of 86 in only 24 balls. The end came quickly and suitably by way of another Curry six. His 65 occupied 46 minutes, he faced 32 balls with six sixes and four fours, 52 in boundaries. He was named Man-of-the-Match. And one mustn't forget Patterson. He scored 44 in 30 balls with six fours. In all 76 out of the 113 scored came in boundaries.

Ireland were now in the last eight.
