This match did not begin until nearly 2.00 p.m. due to morning rain and a wet outfield. It was thus restricted to 46 overs per side. The Irish fielding and bowling were much improved on the previous day on a pitch which gave the spinners some assistance. Ireland held their own in the field but could not complete the job. The fourth Scottish wicket fell in the 40th over at whose end the score was 161. Four more wickets were taken quickly so that in the 43rd over the score was 168 for 8. Then Haggo and Beven added a crucial 30 runs for the 9th wicket in the last four overs. This probably cost Ireland the match.

Ireland retained the same team as for the previous day's match but moved Lewis up to number 3 with Graham dropping to number 7. Scotland showed four changes from the three-day match in June. Haggo replaced Orr as wicket-keeper and Richardson, Hamilton and Govan (all bowlers) dropped out to be replaced by Thomson, Cowan and Beven.

Ireland not unreasonably sent Scotland in under the prevailing conditions. Moore and Cooke bowled to Philip and Storie. Philip clipped Cooke to square leg in the 4th over. 14-1-9. Storie and Patterson then entered into an 84 stand which lasted until the 28th over and gave Scotland a sound initial platform, but there were only some 18 overs left. Ireland switched their bowlers. Harrison, the 5th bowler, eventually dismissed Patterson LBW on the sweep. 98-2-44. McGurk was next. Scoring was slow and by over 34 the score was only 116. Then 10 came off Rao's 2nd last over including a chance to Cooke at deep square leg offered by McGurk. This was not too expensive. In over 37, at 135, Moore came back for Rao and had McGurk caught by Hoey running back at wide mid-on. Storie went to his 50 and took 11 off Harrison's 9th over. In it he gave Lewis an unaccepted chance at mid-on.

Although Salmond only made 6 it came in a stand of 26 with Storie. Then wickets began to tumble. With the last ball of the 40th over, his 10th, Harrison had Salmond LBW down on one knee swinging. 161 for 4. Hoey returned for Moore and with the last ball of the 41st over removed the obdurate Storie. He skied to the Wicket- keeper. His 67 came off 102 balls with only two fours but his innings won him the Man-of-the-Match Award. 165 for 5. Moore returned at the other end when Harrison's stint was over (2 for 42). He took two wickets with successive balls at 168. Benson took a marvellous catch running along the extra cover boundary to dismiss Williamson and Cowan was LBW next ball. 168 for 7. Haggo safely negotiated the hat-trick ball which was the last of the 42nd over. The first ball of the 43rd over (Hoey) was Thomson's first. He failed to survive it being LBW trying to force a ball that kept low. So three wickets had fallen in four balls and there had been four lbw's in the innings. Haggo (15) and Beven (14) did very well to add another critical 30 and Haggo took 12 off the last over bowled by Graham. Hoey finished with 2 for 34 in his 9 overs but the combined 9 overs of Rao and Graham yielded 50.

At 5.25 Warke and Smyth set off to score 199 in 46 overs. Thomson and Cowan were the bowlers. All went well for 10 overs by which time 32 had been scored, with Smyth offering Williamson a half chance of a return catch at 24. Then Smyth was run out. He called a run to short mid-wicket which was not a run, was sent back and was beaten by the throw. Smyth showed dissent to umpire Van Geloven by deed and word and apologies had to be tendered afterwards. 32-1-20. Lewis had made only three when he tried to steer Williamson to 3rd man and was caught at the wicket in the 15th over. 42-2-3. Benson made 14 including the only six of the match off a Williamson no ball. After scoring 14 he was bowled by slow bowler Beven trying to force off the back foot. 67 for 3 after 22 overs. Warke, to this point, had not had much strike, 49 balls out of 132. He now began to open up but lost Rao (9) at 94. He was caught and bowled by Sheridan off the last ball of the 28th over, Sheridan's 3rd. 105 were now required in 18 overs.

The pace had to improve and wickets ceased to fall. 100 came up in 31 overs and Warke went to his 50 in the 34th. Now 80 were required in 12 overs. In the next over Warke (55) fell. He was caught at short mid-wicket by substitute Bruce Russell off Storie. 121 for 5. That probably signalled the end of Ireland' s hopes, only six boundaries had been struck and there were no more in the remainder of the innings. Graham was dropped by the bowler (Sheridan) at 132 in the 38th over and Harrison run out in the next. He played to gully, set off on a silly run, did not hurry when sent back and gully threw down the wicket. 138-6-19. 17 runs later Graham was bowled by Williamson swinging wildly in what was now a forlorn cause.

The last three wickets fell for four runs and there were 19 balls left at the end. Moore was lbw swinging across the line at Beven. Cooke was run out by a great throw from deep square leg to the wicket-keeper and Hoey was caught. All six Scottish bowlers did well. Only Williamson bowled the full quota of nine taking 2 for 31. Beven had 2 for 26 in eight.
