Dennison was unfit for Ireland so Elder played. Ireland were sent into bat and lost three wickets for 54 in the first 19 overs - all to the brisk paced Malone. Warke (14) was caught by wicket-keeper Longmore diving to his right with the score on 28. Masood was caught at short leg for 10 on a bat/pad catch at 44 and Cohen (21) glanced a short ball to Longmore who dived and took a good left-handed catch with the total on 54. 50 had come up in 17.4 overs. Rea and Harrison repaired the damage and were together at lunch when the score was 94-3, Rea 16 and Harrison 23. 32 overs had been bowled in two hours.
In 17.4 overs after lunch another 122 runs were added. 100 came up in 33.2 overs, 150 in 41.2 and 200 in 47.5. Zaidi was hit for 28 in four overs, Barclay 24 in four and Malone, recalled, went for 25 in three overs. Harrison reached 50 with the total on 153 with the last ball of the 42nd over and then really hit about. Rea reached 52 with the total on 178 in the 45th over. Wilson came back for the 48th over and took three wickets with his last five balls. At 200 he had Harrison stumped for 84, scored in 98 minutes with 12 fours. The stand with Rea had put on 146.
In his next over Wilson had Rea caught at long-on for 60 with the score on 209. He batted 116 minutes with eight fours. Corlett hit a six and was bowled for 11 in the same over as Rea. At this point Ireland declared leaving the Duchess's team to get 217 in 103 minutes +20 overs. After the match Robin Marler, the former Sussex captain, gave Jackson the Man-of-the-Match award (Sterling 100) for his declaration! Turner, who saved the match with a century, felt hard done by! Wilson took 3-22 in 6.4 overs, Malone 3-56 in 14.
At 3:27 PM (the close would be at 6:30 PM) Ross and Wagner opened the batting to Corlett and Patterson. Corlett, in particular, bowled very well on a wicket which seamed a little. The openers put on 31 in 10 overs, but after 26 overs the score was 65-6. Corlett and Patterson had got among the wickets. At 31 Ross was caught at the wicket off Corlett. 31-1-15. In the next over Wagner (12) was LBW to Patterson, who in his next over bowled Burridge for 0.
Tea was now taken with the score at 32-3, Barclay 1 not out and the innings was 13.5 overs old. Turner joined Barclay after tea and saw three more wickets fall before he found a lasting partner. Corlett bowled Barclay in the 19th over. 44-4-5. 50 came up in 22.1 overs. At 56 caps Zaidi was caught at mid-on again off Corlett. 56-5-1. This, in fact, turned out to be Corlett's 233rd and last wicket for Ireland.
Elder relieved Patterson and had Trembath LBW in his fourth over after a few near misses. 65-6-3. With the total on 68-6 the last hour was signalled. With Inchmore in Turner went to 50 in 67 minutes and 100 came up in 37.1 overs. Elder switched ends to give Corlett a brief rest and bowled three maidens. Corlett then returned and Halliday was given the next over, the 11th of the last hour. His second ball had Inchmore caught at slip. 101-7-5.
However, a win was not to be. There were 9.4 overs to go - 58 deliveries - when Longmore arrived. He faced only 15 of these as Turner farmed the strike. Halliday came off after three overs and Masood replaced him. With two overs to go Turner was 76. He then took 17 of Masood, including three fours and three of the last ball to take him to face Corlett. He hit him for three fours and for 16 in all to reach 109 at the end of the match. He was in for 114 minutes, faced 123 balls and hit a six (off McBrine) and 13 fours in a match saving and exhilarating display. Corlett bowled 21 of the 47 overs and took 3-64.
AIB hosted a banquet in the Norfolk Arms hotel and next day the party set out for Welshpool on a long haul by coach.
