This match got off on time on a dull, cool day with unchanged teams. Ireland decided to bat first (as usual in such matches they had a choice) as it was felt that the only chance of a win in the impending Nat West match at Northampton was to win the toss and bat first.

The innings was dominated by Masood. He came in in the seventh over and was out in the 53rd for 110 scored in 144 minutes off 123 balls. He hit 14 fours, went to 50 in 64 minutes and to 100 in 123 minutes. He drove, swept, caught and pulled with great precision and played some fine strokes off his toes through mid-wicket. He seldom played a faulty stroke and gave only one extremely difficult chance to mid-wicket off Taylor when he was 59. Bainbridge, Gloucester's most successful bowler of the previous day, did not bowl today.

Gloucester used six bowlers but Tomlins only bowled two overs. Warke and Cohen opened to the bowling of Greene and Burrows. Warke hit the first ball for four but was caught for 5 with the score on 18. Enter Masood. In Greene's next over he hit three fours in four balls. In the next over Burrows bowled Cohen. 38-2-17. Graveney and Alleyne came on. Masood and Dennison added 26 when Graveney had Dennison caught for 4 with the total on 64 in the 19th over. Garth was next in and gave staunch support for almost an hour. He was missed, a stumping chance off Taylor, when 7 and the total 92. Taylor replaced Alleyne. 100 came up in 29.2 overs. Eventually Garth swept Taylor to fine leg and was caught for 21. 139-4. Harrison was next and was with Masood at lunch. The score was now 160-4, Masood 90, Harrison 11.

By running between overs Gloucester had bowled 41 overs in 2 ¼ hours. After two overs by Tomlins, Greene and Alleyne bowled the remaining overs. Masood went carefully to his century and was 108 when Alleyne bowled Harrison for 26 with the score on 197. This was the 50th over but no-one could get the necessary "slog" going. Masood was caught behind in the 53rd over with the score on 207 and Greene bowled McBrine first ball. Corlett and Jackson did their best but only 11 more runs were scored. In the last over Greene hit Jackson's calf so badly that he could not keep wicket, Dennison acting as a deputy. Greene, in 10 overs, took 3-26.

At 2:35 PM Gloucester began with Stovold and Wright to the bowling of Corlett and Milling. Corlett bowled Stovold in his second over and bowled six overs for 13 runs. Milling bowled four overs. Then Garth Halliday and McBrine were tried. At 33 Tomlins (9) was dropped by Corlett at square leg off Garth - an expensive miss. 50 came up in 15.4 overs and at 53 Wright gave Garth a fierce caught and bowled chance which was also missed. 100 came up in 24.4 overs as the pace increased. Wright got to 50 in 65 minutes. He scored 84 in 100 minutes, including four sixes, when McBrine bowled him in the 32nd over. 148-2.

Tea was taken at this point with Tomlins 51 (scored in 87 minutes). Corlett resumed the attack with McBrine and had Alleyne (2) LBW at 161. Six runs later McBrine bowled Tomlins for 62. In nine more overs Graveney and Romaines added 54 to win the match in light rain which grew very heavy just after the end. Masood was Man-of-the-Match (a cut glass tankard) and Gloucestershire were given the Cawood Trophy (a cut glass bowl) for their two wins. Corlett's 2-21 in 11 overs was a very good bowling stint.
