Until nearly 1 pm on the second day of this match Ireland did very well. The New Zealanders were only eight ahead with 8 wickets down. Then Sutcliffe asserted himself and Ireland lost easily. New Zealand shared the 1965 season in England with South Africa and this was their last match. As in 1958 the weather was unkind to them. All three Tests were lost and of 19 first-class matches only three were won, those against Gloucester, Scotland and Ireland, and six were lost. JR Reid, aged 37, was again captain and B Sutcliffe, aged 41, came out of retirement from Test cricket (since 1959) to play. Both were beset by injury and failed. Reid retired after the tour after playing 58 tests since 1949 - all in succession, a record. He was captain in the last 34 matches. JT Ward, the wicket-keeper, was the only other of the 1958 tourists. Of the newcomers B Sinclair had the best batting average, at 36.68, and B Congdon scored the most runs at 885. The fast bowling was good but the spinners met with little or no success. RC Motz took 54 wickets. On the way to England the New Zealanders played seven Tests in India and Pakistan winning none and losing three. A profit of £9000 was made there and a loss of £4000 in England. The gate in the match against Ireland was £250 and the New Zealand guarantee of £450 was paid by Messrs Rothman, the cigarette firm. Rothmans requested that the match be one of three days so a proposed one-day fixture in Dublin was abandoned.

Ireland recalled WR Hunter (who had been unavailable against MCC) and MH Stevenson (who had been dropped against MCC) and left out Duffy and McQuilken. Stevenson in fact cried off and Duffy returned. Of the New Zealanders only T Jarvis and GE Vivian did not play in tests in England.

Ireland won the toss. The wicket was soft and the light poor when Bergin and McCloy opened to Collinge and Cameron. 17 only came in 45 minutes when Cameron bowled Bergin. 17-1-7. McCall was dropped at short square leg by Dowling of his first ball, but was bowled for four when the total was 28. At 32 two wickets fell. McCloy was caught mis-hooking Taylor. He had made 15. Cameron bowled Monteith for 0 with a beauty that moved from leg to off. Pollard (off spin) and Yuile (left arm) came on and at lunch the score was 44-4, Pratt 5 and Duffy 7. The quick men returned after lunch and at 46 Pratt, 7, gave Taylor a sharp chance at short square leg off Cameron. It was dropped. But, at the same score, Yuile, at first slip, caught Duffy off Taylor. Scoring was very slow and at 53 O'Riordan was LBW to Cameron. Pratt now began to play strokes but Hunter was bowled by Cameron at 68. Goodwin came in and played very well. Pratt opened out and 100 was put up. The spinners were tried again but Pratt reached his 50 in 139 minutes when the total was 108-7. The 50 partnership came in only 45 minutes but with 55 added Goodwin was caught off Yuile for 22. 123-8. Two runs later Pratt advanced to Vivian (bowling leg breaks) and was stumped by Dick. His 58 had taken 152 minutes and saved the innings from disaster. Tea was incorrectly taken at 4:15 PM even though nine wickets were down. Afterwards, at 130, Yuile bowled Huey. Cameron bowled his fast seamers very well to take 5-45 in 25 overs. The ball had swung and seamed a great deal.

At 4:50 PM Dowling and Jarvis began for New Zealand. The sun was now shining. Scoring was brisk and 26 came in 30 minutes. At 31 O'Riordan bowled Dowling for 16. He played on. Morgan came in and after an hour Huey replaced O'Riordan at 43-1. In his second over Huey dived to his right and caught and bowled Jarvis. 44-2-22. In his next over Huey dived to his right and caught and bowled Morgan this time, one-handed. 45-3-3. Pollard was next to go. He was 19 and had scored four "50s" in six Test innings in England. Now Duffy leaned forward to scoop up a low catch at silly-mid-off. 46-4-2. Sutcliffe and Yuile now played out time. New Zealanders were 51-4 (Sutcliffe 2, Yuile 0) after 102 minutes. Huey, in seven overs of accurate bowling, had taken 3-2.

Sutcliffe cut loose on the second morning and Huey changed ends. In 20 minutes 24 were added when Yuile mis-drove Huey to O'Riordan at extra-cover. 75-5-4. Vivian never really looked happy and was taken by Goodwin at mid-wicket off a very high skier. 79-6-2. At 86 Hunter ran out Dick hitting the wicket from square leg. Taylor came in and laid about him. 100 came up in 169 minutes but Taylor would have been caught on the mid-wicket boundary off Huey if Goodwin had been stationed on the line rather than 20 yards in. Taylor hit Huey for two sixes to mid-wicket and soon another six saw New Zealand into the lead. 52 were added in 28 minutes before Taylor skied Hunter to Monteith at cover. 138-8-33. Sutcliffe now moved into top gear with Collinge as his partner. A six off Hunter took him to 51 in two hours. Hunter missed a hard caught and bowled chance off Collinge when he was still 0. Sutcliffe now danced out to the slow bowlers and at lunch was 79, and the total was 183-7. 92 had come in the second hour of the morning. Duffy slowed down the scoring a little after lunch. 200 went up and Sutcliffe soon went to his century. It took 191 minutes, the second 50 coming in 72 minutes. It was his first century of the tour in England and his 44th in first-class cricket. With the new ball O'Riordan at last bowled Collinge at 216. Collinge had made 18 out of 78 added in 84 minutes. It was the best ninth wicket stand against Ireland since 1888 and only two short of the record of 80 created at Philadelphia in that year. Without addition Suttcliffe straight drove Hunter for what would have been a six, but Duffy ran from long-off to make a splendid catch. The innings of 216 lasted 275 minutes. Huey ended with 5-68.

At 3:17 PM Bergin and McCloy began again, 86 runs behind. By close of play, 173 minutes later, Ireland had scored those 86 runs but had lost seven wickets and the game was virtually over. It was a sorry collapse. McCloy, six, was caught off the handle at square leg while hooking at Taylor. 7-1-6. At 16 Cameron beat McCall's half cock stroke. At tea, after an hour, Ireland were 22-2, Bergin 8 and Monteith 2. One run later Yuile had Monteith LBW and only three runs were scored in the half hour after tea. At 32 Vivian came on for Cameron. At 38 Duffy "felt" for the leg spin and was caught at the wicket. Bergin and Pratt saw 50 up in 122 minutes. Pollard was tried with his off spin and, at 60, he bowled Bergin who swung and missed at a short ball. Bergin's dour 30 lasted 130 minutes. O'Riordan was dropped at slip off Vivian. 14 were added when Collinge returned with his fast left arm in place of Pollard. He had Pratt caught at leg slip off a lifter. 74-6-13. Morgan yorked O'Riordan, 13, at 82 and at close of play Hunter, 6 and Goodwin, 0, were together and the total was 86-7. The wicket had taken spin and bounce and Cameron's footmarks were causing the left-handed batsman some bother.

Rain in the night got under the covers and the pitch was wet in spots. The captains disagreed and the umpires decided they should start at 12:30 PM, one hour late. The spinners Yuile and Morgan began and at 86 Goodwin turned Morgan to Yuile at forward short leg. 86-8-0. Sutcliffe was given four overs for four runs. Hunter was dropped at slip by Jarvis off Morgan. The fast bowlers were recalled but Hunter struck out well. 26 were added with Colhoun and, on the stroke of lunch, Hunter offered no stroke to Cameron. The ball cut back and he was bowled for 28. A few minutes after lunch, Taylor bowled Huey. In 240 minutes 117 runs were scored. New Zealand used 8 bowlers and all but Sutcliffe took a wicket. Jarvis and Morgan knocked off the runs required, 32, from 7.1 overs.
