The Irish team concluded their English tour with a defeat at the hands of Derbyshire in two days. At 3:30 PM on the first day, the Irishmen were all out for 111. Pollock and Morrison put on 30 for the first wicket but none of the batsmen were comfortable against the often changed and much varied Derby attack. The leg-breaks and googlies of Rhodes caused the most havoc and the innings ended when this bowler dismissed Posnett, Boucher and Crothers with successive balls for a hat-trick. In two hours Alderman and Townsend put on 156 for Derbyshire's first wicket and at the close the score was 234-5 - Barnes dismissing Townsend when that batsmen had made 96.

At 1:06 PM on the second day the last Derby wicket fell and Ireland had a deficit of 181 runs. Rhodes completed a good half-century. Boucher proved very expensive conceding 144 runs in 34 overs compared with Ingram's 72 runs in 38 overs. Seven Irish wickets were down for 85 in the second innings but the tail wagged. Shearer had made 35 in very aggressive style earlier. Then Barnes and Boucher put on 38 for the eighth wicket. Hool and Barnes put on 26 for the ninth wicket and, finally, Hool and Crothers added another 24 for the last wicket making the final total 173 and just failing to avoid an innings defeat. The left-handed Barnes contributed a very valuable 37.

This was the 21st and last match for NH Lambert (1931-1947). He was also a rugby international and, indeed, a referee of rugby internationals and he was the son of RH Lambert (1893-1930)
