The 2016 T20 World Cup group stage opener pitted Ireland against Oman in Northern India at the Dharamsala stadium in the foothills of the Himalayas.
The Irish star was on the wane, a team in need of new blood but the old guard were still hanging on under new coach John Bracewell. This result however was to be the catalyst of change, as at last the powers that be realized a new injection of talent was required.
Ireland batted first and without ever being totally convincing posted 154 for 5, a little under par was the feeling but surely enough against a side whose bowling was considered much their stronger suit. The slingy Munish Ansari claimed three wickets which demolished the stumps of Gary Wilson and Kevin O'Brien.
Oman started strongly reaching 69 without loss but started to wilt as the Irish took control and at 90 for 5, the result seemed to be going very much Ireland's way with 65 needed off 6 overs. However a series of ill-judged bowling changes saw the Irish lose their way and the Omanis pulled off their most famous win and first in a World Cup tournament getting over the line by two wickets in the last over.
The jubilant scenes were in total contrast to Ireland who endured a miserable time in a tournament badly affected by rain, losing also to The Netherlands in a six over contest - their involvement over before it had barely started in a format designed to get lesser sides eliminated as quickly as possible.
