A sharp piece of work by Fintan McAllister to stump Friday Kasteni of Zimbabwe during the 2006 Under World Cup in Sri Lanka is the latest to feature in our series.

I used to love covering the Under 19 World Cups, where the restrictions on photographers weren't as draconian as at full internationals and you could generally choose your shooting positions as long as you weren't stupid.

It gave you a chance to watch future stars, get to know how they played, give them a bit of coverage early in their careers, and build a rapport/trust with them and their families.

The 2006 tournament was held in February in Sri Lanka, and I took a few weeks off work to attend, escaping the cold of an Irish winter.

I'd just bought a new (to me ) camera and lens and the games gave me a perfect opportunity to try them out.

The heat and humidity in Colombo was stifling, and everyone found the going tough. I always liked to get a few early shots in the can, when if I knew I had a few the papers would use I could relax and the pressure was off.

When Ireland played Zimbabwe, Fintan McAllister stumping opener Friday Kasteni off the bowling of Greg Thompson was 'a money shot' as far as I was concerned, with the bat just an inch off the ground and helped by Eoin Morgan also being in the photo.

Sure enough, it was used in quite a few of the papers, and one staged shot I took of Fintan also made me a few quid.

There were nine future Irish internationals in the Ireland squad, and I've just had a look at the Zimbabwe line-up and there are some very familiar names there too - Sean Williams, Graeme Cremer, Ryan Higgins, Gary Ballance, Keegan Meth and the captain of Railway Union's National Cup side last year, Glenn Querl.

I was working at the tournament as a freelancer, but not under any pressure to cover costs. It was more or less a holiday as far as I was concerned.

Still, when I looked at the lack of tournament photos on the ICC site, I thought it would be a good opportunity to strike a deal. Alas, they didn't see it the same way, and declined.

I even offered to give them the Fintan photo for a couple of tournament polo shirts for my nephew who collected such things, but again my offer was rebuked. Politics at play I knew, but up to them as the Thais say.

James Fitzgerald was also at the competition working for a variety of papers, and it has to be said, working bloody hard. He did manage to blag us a free membership of the business lounge at the Galadari Hotel, where after games I could write and edit photos, overlooking the Indian Ocean while a waiter brought me ice cold beer - heaven!

Ireland would finish 13th beating Namibia and Uganda in the placings, but came close twice to upsetting Full Members. They came within one blow of beating England, while also lost to New Zealand when Tim Southee bludgeoned a back-from-the-dead win for them.

On the last day of the tournament, Uganda were playing Scotland in a way out of town location for the final placing. I had a late breakfast and decided to get in a tuk-tuk and go along for a few hours.

There were about five spectators there, plus too many security staff for my liking, who weren't exactly delighted by my arrival as I awoke them from their various states of slumber.

I tottered down to the farthest end of the ground and set up to have the pavilion as a back-drop. All was quiet until about the 47th over when I spotted an official coming in my direction. Never a good sign. They had been instructed by ICC to ask me to move to the other end of the ground where there was no shade and a designated area for photographers had been roped off - nobody was in it of course.

I smiled at the guy, and said you can tell the ICC that Barry said piss off, I'm not being re-routed. This is my traditional spot...

I knew it wouldn't end well but by this time it was the 48th over, and it would take the guy about 10 minutes to return. Sure enough as the last ball was being bowled a delegation made its way to me and escorted me to the other end of the ground.

The Sri Lankan papers had been giving the ICC a hard time about the lack of marketing and promotion of the tournament, so I told the officials I would be contacting them and telling them of their treatment of me and how the only media person at the game was being made to feel unwelcome.

During the lunch interval there were lots of phone calls toing and froing and sure enough about 10 minutes after the restart, the official came to me and said that it had been decided I could indeed shoot the game from wherever I wanted. I must admit I took a certain pleasure telling them that it was okay, I would shoot from the designated spot …

There was one further noteworthy part of the whole trip (apart from getting the shit scared out of me by Iain Knox who told me to be careful of snakes in the grass and then a while later tickling the back of my leg with a long stick), when at the end of the year ICC bought the stumping photo to use in their calendar. For $300....
