Catches win matches. It's an effort by Gavin McKenna which ultimately won a NCU Senior Cup replay between North Down and Instonians which is the favourite photograph of John Boomer.

Cricket is considered a team game – normally with eleven players per side – the “ins” scoring runs until they’re “out” when the “outs” go in until they’re all “out” – the team with the most runs wins unless the second team pass the first team’s score first.

But arguably it is not one team against the other; rather it is just a batsman facing a bowler with the other players acting as “loafers” or as “fetchers” to return the ball back to the bowler.

But my favourite picture is by a “fetcher” from the replay of the third round Challenge Cup match between Instonians and North Down in 2008.

The first match at The Green ended up as tie – James Shannnon (pictured below) hit a boundary and thought he had won the match for Instonians but the scores were tied on 191. Andrew Haire then caught man of the match Shannon for 68.

And so to a replay two weeks later. Only one innings was completed on 28 June when North Down managed a slightly higher score of 199-7 in their 50 overs.

Robin Haire top scored with 40 after opener Ryan Haire made 39. Instonians started their innings on 3rd July and, despite John Stevenson , Rory McCann, James Shannon and Eugene Moleon being “out”, were slight favourites on 125-4 when Andrew White (pictured below on 63) swept Ralph Coetzee to mid-wicket, the ball barely rising above knee high.

But Gavin McKenna (pictured below) dived to his left and took a miraculous catch just inches from the turf. Photographers often focus on the batsmen and bowlers and that is usually where the key action is - stumps and balls flying, bowlers action and appeals but in this case it was a “fetcher” who created the turning point of the match.

Instonians' innings then subsided to finished on 161-9 as Richard McCarthy was unavailable - 38 runs short with 17 balls left.

The catch possibly deserved a MOM award, but it was presented to Andrew Haire who had 4 wickets for just 23 runs in his 8 overs.
