The Tipperary born man played three times that season in the InterContinental Cup that season, but despite being in the squad for the ODI series in Zimbabwe didn't feature and wasn't selected again. He has been a regular in the Leinster Senior league with Pembroke and Rush.
My favourite match has to be my debut game in Rathmines vs The Netherlands in the Intercontinental cup in August 2010. It was an absolute dream come true for me. Something that would have felt like pure fantasy when I fell into the game playing in my cousin David Deanes back garden at the age of 12 in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary.
David himself had come across the game at the age of 15 and had started playing for the nearest club to us, Ballyeighan Birr Co. Offaly. So myself, brothers and neighbours followed suit taking up this game. I didn't play my first game until I was 14 and didn't play any representative youth cricket and only a couple of South Leinster games before that series was disbanded for a few years.
My call up for the game against the Netherlands came about as firstly I was selected the week before to play against the MCC at College park in a 3 day game. I bowled pretty well on a wet and slow wicket and didn't give much away and got a couple of wickets also. Craig Young who was also playing had been selected for the Netherlands game but ended up injuring himself on the first day of the game against the MCC.
Later that afternoon the Chairman of CI David Williams asked me did he need me to contact my employer to inform them about needing the time off the following week so of course I thanked him and gave him the details. When I got back to work a day or so later I was drawn over the coals for having 'someone outside the company' contact my boss about the time off and they were only giving me the time off because they had to.
Not exactly ideal preparation for an international debut. The game itself began in overcast conditions with a pretty stiff breeze and me being tasked with having the first over up the hill into the breeze. I was actually surprised to be given the 1st over as I thought Trent Johnston would have taken the first over with the wind from the other end but in hindsight it was actually a good thing, as if I'd had to wait an over it would just have given me further time to get nervous about the first ball.
The 1st few overs went off without incident before in the 6th I managed to get one to lift a bit and move away from Eric Szwarczynski with Trent Johnston taking a chest high catch reverse cup to give me my first international wicket. I remember Gary Wilson coming over to me and saying that he was surprised Trent held onto it as he'd dropped a couple in the previous few games. I'm sure he was saying it in jest.
The rest of the first innings was dominated by George Dockrell and Albert Van Der Mervwe who bowled exceptionally well to bowl them out for 188. In our reply I remember feeling extremely disappointed for James Hall who was also on debut and only got 7. I'd chatted to James a decent bit in the build up to the game and was hoping he'd do well.
The rest of the innings although Alex Cusack and Kevin O'Brien both got 40s, it paled in comparison to the masterclass that Andrew White and John Mooney put on. I remember Andrew White after walking off having for 144 and he looked as fresh as when he began his innings.
I had a little 8 not out myself with the bat, hitting a four down the ground off Peter Seelaar. In the Netherlands 2nd innings I again started bowling up the hill but the breeze wasn't as strong and I felt I bowled better. I found a better rhythm and was causing the batsmen more problems than I had in the 1st innings.
I got Tim De Grooth caught behind and soon after I got switched to bowl at the other end. The field was extremely attacking with a mid wicket being the only fielder on the leg side and a point and mid off being the only fielders in front of square on the off side. I was really hitting a good rhythm and generating decent pace. I remember bowling particularly well to Peter Borren who played and missed at a decent few deliveries before I eventually got him LBW.
The game seemed to go by extremely quickly, I got my 4th wicket of the innings and had one ball left in my 18th over. Trent ambled across to me, put his arm around my shoulder and just said not to chase it, just to bowl as I had been. Bowled a ball on about 4th stump to Kashif who played and missed but it must have been extremely close to the edge of the bat. The next over Albie finished the Dutch off and we had won by an innings and 84 runs.
Honestly it was one of the proudest moments of my life to wear the Shamrock and one I will never forget. I can look back with ifs, buts and maybes at what happened after this game but I've done something that many dream of and few people get to accomplish.
