Ireland's five-wicket win at Clontarf against Surrey in the C&G Trophy in 2004 is the favourite game of former Irish international Andrew White.

'Whitey' played 232 for Ireland, scoring 4560 runs at 27.80 with 19 fifties and six centuries. In addition he claimed 125 wickets at 25.63. He is the current Chairman of Selectors, plays for Instonians in the NCU, and is involved with the Andrew White Cricket Academy.

So many of the victories over the last twenty years have been special for different reasons. It is extremely difficult to select one, but there was a day back in May 2004 that I always look back on as the catalyst ... not just in my career but undoubtedly for others.

It was the day that changed the mindset of Irish cricketers, under a coach in Adi Birrell who was both inspirational and instrumental in the change!

Ireland v Surrey in the 2004 C&G Trophy at Clontarf. Playing against professional opposition was always a 'backs against the wall' challenge but this Ireland team was gathering momentum in terms of performance and most importantly belief.

We had dispatched Zimbabwe a year earlier by 10 wickets but this was a tougher contest, not least with the likes of Saqlain Mushtaq in their attack. They batted first and got off to an impressive start with Alistair Brown being particularly aggressive, plundering 4 sixes and 6 fours in his 67.

Mark Ramprakash and Adam Hollioake made contributions before Kyle McCallan made important break throughs. Spin played its part as we kept a lid on their run scoring and potentially the lack of pace in the wicket played into our hands with Andre Botha doing what we loved watching him do, which was bowl with unerring accuracy and picking up three wickets in the process.

They failed to make a big impact at the latter stages of their innings but a score of 267 in 2004 in May at Clontarf was a formidible chase.

Jason Molins and Jeremy Bray complimented each other brilliantly at the top of the order scoring 50s but just as we had an attack for the conditions, they did likewise, with Azhar Mahmood, Adam Hollioake, Saqlain Mushtaq and Ian Salisbury particularly effective.

That said, our overseas player for the tournament, Gerald Dros added a mightily effective 45 along with Peter Gillespie who was a consistent performer against county opposition.

Kyle and myself came together with about 40 runs needed and while it might not have been pretty at times, we managed to find a way.

The desire to finish off the hard work by the top order drove us over the line and sparked scenes of jubilation, especially amongst supporters, many of whom had come in during the mornings play as we got closer to victory. (Match finished on the second day due to rain).

It was perhaps not surprising that four weeks later we would chase down 292 to beat the West Indies at Stormont!

And so the seeds of learning how to win had been sown. Needless to say, it was most enjoyable.
