Ireland against a West Indies side containing Brian Lara, Richie Richardson, Carl Hooper and Ian Bishop is the favourite game of former Irish captain Jason Molins.

Although the game didn't go too well personally for Molins, he did get his revenge nine years later as part of the side that chased 292 to beat them at Stormont.

He played 76 times between 1995 and 2005, scoring 2138 runs at 28.51, which included hundreds against ECB England XI and Zimbabwe.

His captaincy marked a successful period of 26 wins in 41 matches, the win % of 63 the most successful of the post second world war period.

Brian Lara in action at Clontarf

Watching The West Indies during the 80's and early 90's had a huge influence on my cricketing career. As a 7 year-old I remember getting to rub shoulders (ok - so more likely I was up to his knees at best) with Joel Garner in Rathmines. Joel signed my cricket bat and became a prized possession in my bedroom for most of my childhood.

In 1995, in only my second Irish cap I got to play against the West Indies in Clontarf. The team was full of household names…..you only had to mention their first names and you knew exactly who they were - Richie, Curtly, Courtney and then some up and coming star called Brian Charles.

I remember sitting in the hotel restaurant on the morning of the game and seeing all these giants walking into the dining room. I was in awe - and to say I was nervous was an understatement.

My memory from the game is that they scored buckets of runs - however it was a timed game and we needed them to declare. The rain came in the middle of the afternoon and while we were waiting in the dressing room, once the rain had stopped we were told that the West Indies had declared and that it was 20 minutes before we were going in to bat.

Ryan Eagleson bowling for Ireland
I was opening the batting with Stephen Warke and I spent the next 20 minutes putting my chest guard on and then taking it off. It felt so uncomfortable and I couldn't get used to it. Ian Bishop and Otis Gibson opened the bowling. I left a couple of nice gentle deliveries outside my off-stump off Bishop and felt quite comfortable.

My fourth ball was short into the ribs and I defended into the leg side for no run. Twenty of my university mates had come to support and as they weren't exactly big cricketing fans they decided to cheer the fact that I had hit the ball.

Next thing, the whole ground was cheering and clapping. I thought it was quite funny until Shiv Chanderpaul (fielding at short-leg) decided to chirp 'C'mon Bish wipe the smile off this boys face'. A few deliveries later, I was bowled for 0.

So a duck on my second cap but a day playing cricket for Ireland that I will never forget.

However, the match I probably talk about most about was in 2003 against The Free Foresters, played at Eton college. Eoin Morgan and Boyd Rankin made their debuts in this match. Eoin, batting at 3 came into bat very early after Jeremy Bray was out.

Eoin was very young at the time (maybe 16), and understandably was quite nervous. I tried to calm him telling him that he was playing against a bunch of primarily club cricketers, and that he had faced much tougher bowlers in training.

However, before he had faced a ball I had run him out, calling for a single that was never a single as Andy Whittall (Zimbabwean cricketer) and one of the best fielders in the world, hit the stumps directly.

Eoin Morgan, World Cup winning captain, MBE, run out on debut because of me…………has a lot to thank me for, as this clearly turned him into the cricketer he has become today :-) !
