Left-arm spinner Greg Molins played 26 times for Ireland between 1996 and 1999. He captured 29 wickets with perhaps his most famous victim being Mark Waugh, who along with his brother Steve played for Ireland.
The obvious game to pick is probably one that you played in, but for me the love of the game came from watching a particular game and that game was a two-day game in Rathmines in 1984. This is when the West Indian team came to Observatory Lane.
It was a team of superstars, that I am sure walked the streets of Dublin and got mistaken for a US touring basketball team.
Being eight years of age and being up close and personal with the likes of Garner, Walsh, Gomes, Logie, Richardson, Greenidge, Harper and Dujon. The seed was sown.
As for the game itself , did it really matter. Of all the 7 West Indian batsmen to have walked to the crease, all bar Dujon passed 50 with Gomes and Logie scoring 153 and 129 respectively.
The West Indies declared on 584 for 6 in their first innings and in reply Ireland were 187 for 9. So the game was drawn.
At the time as an 8 year old did I really care what the score was , did I care who was playing for Ireland, did I care that Alan Lewis got a 10 ball duck. The answer is no.
We are now creating our own cricket superstars. Ones that any 8 year old will hopefully aspire to become in the green shirt of Ireland.
How times have changed!
