Former Irish international and CricketEurope founder John Elder recounts the second match in our 1000 series. His game is in the sweltering summer of 1976 and a game against traditional foes Scotland.

The tall opening bowler played 37 times for Ireland between 1973 and 1987, taking 70 wickets at an average of 24.67, taking five wickets or more on five occasions.

The former Queens University lecturer was an internet trailblazer, starting the ICU website in the mid 1990's which then became Cricket Ireland. Along with like-minded cricketing colleagues, he founded CricketEurope in 2005.

I'm opting for a match in which I played - the three day match between Scotland and Ireland at Hamilton Crescent, Glasgow, during the blazing hot summer of 1976. They were undoubtedly the hottest conditions in which Ireland has ever played a three day match in these islands.

The Irish team in that game contained, in my opinion, six of the best cricketers ever to play for Ireland - Jack Short, Ivan Anderson, Dermott Monteith, Alec O'Riordan, Simon Corlett and Michael Halliday. All of them would have got into any Irish team of any era.

Both teams started their first innings disastrously but then went on to make large totals before declaring.

Ivan Anderson and Alec O'Riordan made centuries in the Irish first innings as they rescued their side from 31 for three.

Ralph Laing replied with a brilliant century for Scotland after they in turn had collapsed to 22 for three.

Then Ivan Anderson achieved the great feat of two centuries in a first class match as he compiled an unbeaten second innings ton.

That was the match when Irish Cricket Union President Dr Billy Ritchie pronounced Irish travelling supporter Cyril Sterrit dead during a reception given by the Chivas Regal (whisky) sponsors in the Wickets Hotel next to the ground.

Cyril's body was covered with tablecloths while an ambulance awaited and people gathered around to say a few prayers in his memory.

However, after about ten minutes the tablecloths suddenly stirred and a startled and surprisingly healthy Cyril emerged from underneath!

Too much sun and the the sponsors' product had obviously taken their toll of the jolly Dubliner, thereafter to be known as 'Lazarus'.
