Scotland are the new ICC Trophy champions after beating Ireland by 47 runs at Clontarf on Wednesday.

This was Scotland's first ICC Trophy triumph and is the biggest international cricket success in the nation's history.

This eighth ICC Trophy final was the first for both competing sides. Scotland joins a list of winners that comprises Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe (three times), United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh and Holland.

Ireland were without captain Jason Mollins who had failed to recover from a shoulder injury. Stand-in captain Kyle McCallan put Scotland in to bat and though his own 10-over spell was economical, the rest of the Ireland bowling attack could not match the off-spinner's accuracy.

The strong Scottish batting line-up took full advantage. Ryan Watson top-scored with 94 runs while Fraser Watts and Dougie Brown both contributed half centuries to a total of 324 for 8 in 50 overs.

The Ireland reply began badly with Paul Hoffman capturing the wickets of Dominick Joyce and Eoin Morgan in the opening overs.

Jeremy Bray and Ed Joyce fought back and as first Bray and then Joyce passed the 50 mark Ireland began to build a platform from which they looked capable of launching an assault on the imposing target. But neither Bray nor Joyce was able to push on to produce a match-winning innings. Both were caught by man-of-the-match Watson who also took a wicket in nine tidy overs of off-spin.

Ireland's tail didn't give up the fight but they fell 47 runs short at the end of their 50 overs.

Both Ireland and Scotland have qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 along with Bermuda, Canada and Holland.

Holland batsman Bas Zuiderent was named Man of the Tournament. He hit three centuries and was the tournament's top scorer.
