The Under 9 cricketers got under way on Sunday, 25 May, kick starting their 2014 season at a sunny & warm Cronkbourne cricket ground.

There was a slight change to the usual format whereby each of the 5 clubs play against each other once for 4 points, as both Ramsey & Crosby fielded 2 teams, which can only be a good sign for the promotion and development of junior cricket on the island.

2 groups of 4 & 3 teams were created with each team playing each other once in group A with the winner going on to a final. In group B, teams would play each other once with the top 2 teams playing each other again in a play off to progress to the final.

In the first stage of matches in group A, one of 2014s favourites for the title Cronkbourne were pushed hard by Crosby A but the Tromode boys came out on top. In the other game, 2013 league winners Finch Hill started the season magnificently and were run away winners beating Ramsey B by 105 runs.

Cronkbourne then followed their first win with another by beating Ramsey B by 57 runs. Crosby A then created what people were calling the shock of the day as they beat Finch Hill by 25 runs, scoring a total of 262.

This left it all to play for going into the final group A matches with Cronkbourne top on 8 points and Crosby A & Finch Hill level on 4. Crosby A won against Ramsey B to go level at the top of the table and a defeat in the final game for Finch Hill would leave them as spectators for the final. Superb all round cricket between the top 2 sides was evident and Cronkbourne started strongly ending with a very competitive 251 runs. Finch Hill then started a little tentatively before the 3rd pairing scored a huge 49 runs helping guide the Finches to 278 runs and score of 8 points to finish joint 1st in group A.

Finger nails were being bitten around the ground as the total amount of runs scored were tallied up, as this would determine the winner of the group. Finch Hill took the honours scoring 818 runs ahead of Crosby A with 748 runs and Cronkbourne with 758.

In group B, Crosby's B team started very strongly with a 62 run win over Ramsey scoring 267, one of the highest scores of the day. Castletown then beat Ramsey in a low scoring match as 218 runs played 191.

In the 3rd and final match Crosby B showed there surprise supremacy as they beat Castletown in what would be a rehearsal of the upcoming group B play off. Crosby B then beat Castletown again to go through to the days final and, together with Crosby A's great work in group A, has shown what a great potential Crosby has for the season, and beyond.

In the final Crosby B chose to bat first and were held back by Finch Hill in the first half of their innings before creating some comfort in the 2nd half ending with a decent score of 229. Finch Hill got off to a quick start before being pegged back. Crosby B were still in with a shout before the last pairing for Finch Hill blitzed the boundary to win the day with 263 runs.

It was a perfect day with some more than useful batting, bowling and fielding on display in all games played. The day was bright, and the islands cricketing future also looks bright."
