In a battle of the spinners, Tanzania prevailed over the Cayman Islands despite scoring only 138 in the first innings.

Needing to win, and win handsomely, to stay in division five, the Cayman Islands openers had a sprightly beginning on a pitch offering good carry but inconsistent bounce. The bat was beaten on several occasions by both Wright and Kevin Ebanks without success. Tanzania made it through to the 11th over without loss.

The match changed dramatically with the wicket of Kiongozi, bowled by Roland Ebanks by a ball that stayed low, and the introduction of Alessandro Morris in the following over. Morris had struggled for rhythm in the tournament to date, after spending the winter without cricket in Ireland, but he found it here, varying his deliveries and extracting occasional sharp turn.

After a couple of loose overs from Roland Ebanks, drifting into the pads of Patwa who hit him for three consecutive lofted boundaries, both bowlers applied the screws to a Tanzanian lineup bereft of ideas.

Five wickets were lost in six overs for 15 runs: Morris going through the gate of the left-handed Seif Abdul as he attempted to slog; Patwa lbw, to his chagrin, to Ebanks to a ball that seamed into his pads; Jasani run out at the keeper's end after being sent back by his partner; Nyaikini lbw to Morris playing around his front pad; and Hasimi feathering a slow ball behind.

After a brief partnership between Khalil Rehmtullah and Nassoro, Roland Ebanks bowled the latter with a ball that moved away and took off-stump, to finish with 4-44. With Morris also nearing the end of his spell, Rehmtullah chose an ill-advised method of playing him out, repeatedly attempting to slog him away, finally being bowled on the last ball of his spell to a slider.

Morris finishing with 3-18 off his 10 overs. The openers returned for the Cayman Islands, and in the 32nd over, Wright had Amiri caught from a top-edge trying to lift the ball to leg. Tanzania slumping to 89-9.

Here though, the match turned in the African's favour. Wicket-keeper captain Nasibu Mapunda and Ally Kimote put away the lofted shots and began working the ball around. Both short of stature; they repeatedly fended the ball from their chest, but no break-through was forthcoming. With the Cayman Islands playing a bowler short, they were eventually forced to use their part-time spinners, and the partnership blossomed to 49 before Mapunda was lbw for 27.

Needing to chase the 138 in 27.4 overs to avoid relegation - just over 5 runs per over - the Cayman Islands didn't need to play the shots they attempted in the brief pre-lunch session. In just 5.3 overs, they lost two wickets for 30; Roach caught chipping to mid-on for 2 and Hall to a top-edge back to Hamisi for 14.

After lunch, Bryan - a relaxed left-handed batsman with soft-hands - looked the most likely to help them to their target, but Sealy set off on a single before the ball had passed mid-wicket, leaving his partner stranded well short of his ground, out for 21.

Tanzania then switched to an all spin approach with Hamisi darting deliveries in with his left-arm orthodox, and Nassoro, taking advantage of his own lack of stature to keep his off-spin low and skidding. The required run-rate lifting, the Cayman Islands suffered their own catastrophic collapse, losing 5/18 off 9 overs: Roland Ebanks was bowled by Hamisi; Sealy's lofted drive snatched out of the air at deep mid-on; Wright stumped after a wild swing off Nassoro; and Kevin Ebanks caught by Seif Abdul at point.

Needing a further 72 off 6.5 overs with only 3 wickets in hand, the Cayman Islands forewent going down in a hail of bullets to trying to win the game. They demonstrated, perhaps, that less aggressive stroke-play was the better method, putting on 47 in 15 overs: Willis working the ball well off his legs to make 22, and Cato driving strongly in his 31.

The win was also eluded the Cayman Islands however. Tanzania's aggressive appeals for lbw eventually bore fruit for Nyaikini, and he took the last three wickets with the Cayman Islands still 13 runs short of the total. The fast bowler finishing with figures of 4/14 off 4.1 overs. Hamisi named man-of-the-match for his 3/21; Nassoro the other key contributer with 2/17.

The victory pushed Tanzania to third in the table after the group stage. The Cayman Islands relegated with just the single victory on the opening day against Guernsey; their batting clearly not up to the task with four scores below 160 and just 204 against Nigeria.
