Nigeria ensured that they were still in with a sniff of promotion after beating the Cayman Islands today at the Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur.
Opting to field first after winning the toss, Nigeria didn't start too well when Saheed Akolade sent the first ball of the match for five wides. Fortunately that wasn't a sign of things to come for the Africans, as both openers found themselves back in the dressing room having been dismissed for ducks by Akolade.
Raymond Sealy took control over the first half of the innings, scoring 58 before he was bowled by Olajide Bejide in the 27th over, taking the score to 91-5. Kervin Ebanks with 37 and Troy Taylor with 33 helped ensure that the lower order were able to make the total somewhat respectable, taking the Caymans to 204 before they were bowled out from the last ball of the innings.
Nigeria started their reply in fine style with openers Endurance Ofem and Segun Olayinka sharing in a 180 partnership that got them within touching distance of the target. The partnership ended when Ofem was bowled by Ricardo Roach for 90.
Olayinka was bowled for 84 by Troy Taylor two overs later, and Ricky Sharma was trapped lbw first ball, leaving Nigeria on 187-3. There was to be no batting collapse though as Emmanuel Okwudili and captain Kunle Adegbola guided the Nigerians to a seven wicket win with 9.2 overs to spare.
Nigeria will play Tanzania tomorrow, whilst the Cayman Islands will come up against the so far unbeaten Jersey.
