Canada's first round campaign at the Under-19 World Cup in the UAE has come to an end with defeat to the West Indies in Abu Dhabi today.
Batting first after winning the toss, the West Indies innings was built around the innings of Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of West Indies great Shivnarine. He put on 62 for the first wicket with opening partner Shimron Hetmyer and followed this with a 95 run partnership for the second wicket with Jeremy Solozano, who was out having scored 50.
Chanderpaul was eventually out in the penultimate over of the West Indies innings for 93. Nicolas Pooran gave their innings some late impetus, scoring 67 from just 41 balls to help take them to 289-4 from their 50 overs.
Canada started reasonably well in reply, with Nitesh Kumar scoring 50 and Nikhil Dutta scoring 62. They were unable to have anyone score quickly towards the end of their innings, as Pooran did for the West Indies, and lost wickets quickly at the end.
Having reached 197-3 in the 44th over, they promptly lost their last seven wickets for just 29 runs to be bowled out for 226, losing by 63 runs.
Canada will now play in the 9th place quarter finals on Saturday against whichever team finishes third in group B. The West Indies will play the winners of group B in the quarter finals on Sunday.
