Former Dutch international Tim de Leede has been appointed player-coach at the Voorburg CC for the 2014 season. De Leede, 46, who has played at Voorburg for his entire career, will also head youth coach at the club. The former national team captain, who holds the records for both runs and wickets for the Netherlands, is expected to take a more active playing role in the first IX than in recent years as VCC push for promotion back to the Topklasse, from which they were relegated in 2009.
Chairman Richard de Lange said; "following the 2013 season, [where VCC finished fourth in the Hooftklasse] the board held consultations with the team. This reavealed a need for a unifying force in the team, continuity in coaching and individual development." Long-time VCCer De Leede seemed the natural choice. "In Tim we have a deeply experienced and respected level-3 coach who fits the profile perfectly."
De Leede will be assisted in his coaching duties and organization of the first XI by former Dutch international Marc Nota, Mark Mulready, and new team manager Mark Steffelaar. Voorburg will be fielding a relatively young team in the coming season; their squad has an average age of 22, including eight players under 20, among them 19 year-old fast bowler Vivian Kingma, who made his international debut last season. Also joining the squad will be Australian all-rounder Ethan Bartlett (26), who has been playing for the Wagga RSL Bulldogs in grade cricket and comes with a glowing recommendation from former VCC player John Cheadle. 21 year-old wicket-keeper/batsman Josh Lenssen, born in New Zealand but qualified to play for the Netherlands, will be returning for a third season at VCC.
De Leede is looking forward to the challenge of developing this young squad but is realistic in not expecting immediate success. "Experience is cricket is all-important. Batsmen often peak around 30 years old, bowlers on average sooner. If they want to reach the highest level then regular and, especially, effective training is necessary." De Leede previously held the position of player-coach at the club in 1996, 1997 and 2003, and captained their 2002 national championship-winning team.
