Papua New Guinea put themselves in a great position to become the first East Asia Pacific side to qualify for a senior World Cup after a thumping win over Namibia today in New Zealand.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Namibia soon found themselves on the back foot after a horror start that saw them collapse to 16-4, at one point losing three wickets in 10 balls. Gerrie Snyman and Craig Williams then made an effort to recover the innings, putting on 51 for the fifth wicket.
That partnership was ended when Williams was out for 27. Whilst Snyman went on to score 54, Namibia never really recovered from that terrible start.
Papua New Guinea's bowlers kept it simple, just bowling straight and accurately. Of the ten Namibian wickets to fall, only one involved a fielder, and that was the wicketkeeper. Mahuru Dai was the pick of the bowlers with 3-34.
In reply, Lega Siaka ensured that Papua New Guinea had no trouble at all chasing their target. He hit 112 not out from just 82 balls to take his team to an eight wicket win in 25 overs.
The win, combined with Kenya's remarkable win over the Netherlands, ensured that Papua New Guinea reached the Super Six stage with maximum points. Namibia had already secured their place in the second stage.
