No ICC East Asia Pacific region side has ever qualified for a World Cup or World Twenty20 tournament before, but Papua New Guinea are now just one win away from that historic first appearance after beating Namibia today in Abu Dhabi.
Batting first after being put in by Namibian captain Sarel Burger, PNG started with a 42 run opening partnership between Asad Vala and Tony Ura, which ended when Vala was out for nine. Ura went on to score 34 before he was third out with the score on 59.
Geraint Jones and Jack Vare then put on 64 for the fourth wicket before Jones was out for 36, the top score of the innings. Vare ended the innings unbeaten on 30 in the PNG total of 145.
In Namibia's reply, Craig Williams was the only batsman to get a decent start, scoring 42 from 37 balls, but his innings came after a terrible start when Namibia lost their first four wickets for just 16, Pipi Raho taking 3-10.
Namibia were bowled out for 120 in the end, losing by 25 runs.
Papua New Guinea will play Hong Kong tomorrow with the winners qualifying for the World Twenty20. Namibia will look to gain a consolation win when they play Italy in the ninth place play-off.
