Papua New Guinea recovered from a poor start to beat Bermuda and secure their place in the qualification play-offs today in Dubai.
Batting first after winning the toss, PNG soon found themselves in trouble at 9-3 with Asad Vala, Kila Pala and Geraint Jones all dismissed. Jack Vare was fourth out soon afterwards with the score on 26, and PNG looked to be in big trouble.
Tony Ura and Mahuru Dai then led a recovery, putting on 76 for the fifth wicket before Ura was out for 47. Dai and Charles Amini then put on an unbroken 66 for the sixth wicket, with Dai ending the innings on 64. Amini had scored 32, and PNG had reached 168-5 in their 20 overs.
Bermuda kept wickets in hand in the early part of their innings, but just as they were looking to accelerate, they began to lose wickets. Janeiro Tucker was the third wicket to fall in the 14th over with the score on 107 having scored 42.
David Hemp stayed in for four more overs, but when he was out having scored 64 from 49 balls, Bermuda had lost seven wickets and were well out of the game. They were restricted to 143-9, losing by 25 runs.
Papua New Guinea will now play Namibia in an elimination final on Wednesday, needing to win to keep their World Twenty20 qualification hopes alive. Bermuda meanwhile will play Uganda on Tuesday in the 13th place play-off.
