Few would have predicted that Hong Kong would have been one of only two teams to remain unbeaten after three rounds of matches at the World Twenty20 Qualifier, but after beating Canada today, they top Group A with Ireland trailing in second place.
Put into bat by Canadian captain Ashish Bagai, Hong Kong's opening pair of Irfan Ahmed and Waqas Barkat put on 101 before Barkat was dismissed for 31 in the twelfth over. Ahmed dominated that partnership, and he continued on to reach his century from 53 balls before he too was out.
No other batsman made any significant contribution, but Ahmed had given them a good foundation and they scored 168-5 from their 20 overs. Jeremy Gordon was the only Canadian bowler to emerge with any real credit, going for just 117 from his four overs.
In reply, Canada never really looked like getting close to their target. Jimmy Hansra and Raza-ur-Rehman were the only batsman to go past 20, with 26 and 23 respectively, and they were restricted to 115-8 from their 20 overs, giving Hong Kong a 53 run win. Munir Dar was the pick of the bowlers with 4-17.
Hong Kong will look to continue their winning run tomorrow when they take on the UAE, whilst Canada will try to pick up their first win when they take on Uganda.
