Another day, another close finish in the World Twenty20 qualifier, which is fast becoming one of the best associate tournaments ever. This time it was Uganda and Italy who put on a superb display, with Uganda snatching victory from the proverbial jaws of defeat.
Batting first after being put in by Uganda, Italy's innings was again led by Gareth Berg, who hit 62 from just 34 balls before he was caught and bowled by Patrick Ochan. Peter Petricola also contributed with 34, and some quick scoring towards the end took them to 148-4 from their 20 overs.
Uganda's reply started well as they scored 72-2 from their first eight overs, Arthur Kyobe hitting 36 from just 15 balls. But they then collapsed from 72-2 to 84-7 inside just three overs, and when Frank Nsubuga was eighth out with the score on 97 in the 14th over, the game looked over.
But Richard Okia and Charles Waiswa had other ideas as they put on 49 to take Uganda to the position where they needed just three from the last over.
Waiswa fell to the first ball of the final over, and a dot ball then had Uganda needing three from four balls. Number 11 Senyondo ran a single to put Okia back on strike, and after facing a dot ball, he hit the penultimate ball of the match to the boundary to secure the one wicket win.
Uganda will be back in action tomorrow when they may come up against former teammate Kenneth Kamyuka, who now plays for Canada. Italy will play Namibia in their next match, also tomorrow.
