Ireland had a comfortable 32 runs win against Namibia in their opening World T20 Qualifier in Abu Dhabi today.
Sent into bat by Namibia a sparkling opening stand of 84 by Paul Stirling and William Porterfield in less than 9 overs drove Ireland to 166 for 5 wickets. Stirling, who was named man of the match, made 52 off just 36 balls with a mixture of subtlety and brute force. He hit 4 fours and 2 massive sixes. Porterfield got 33 off 25 balls with 3 fours and 1 six.
The O'Brien brothers and Gary Wilson all got into the twenties to ensure Ireland posed a competitive total. Wilson in particular give the innings late momentum with a quick fire 20 of just 13 balls. Namibia captain Sorel Burger with 1 for 23 was the only bowler to threaten Ireland's progress.
Namibia never got to grips with the run chase with only Van Schoor, who made a not out 48, causing the Ireland bowling any problems. Apart from a wayward opening spell by Trent Johnston, who conceded 7 wides in his two overs, the Ireland bowlers were disciplined, with Tim Murtagh 1 for 19 and Alex Cusack 2 for 22 particularly impressive.
George Dockrell got some rhythm back with a tidy spell and Max Sorensen picked up a wicket in his only over. Ireland also effected two run outs but however missed the chance of a few more and they also had several misfields. No doubt Phil Simmons will be addressing this aspect before tomorrow's match.
In the end Namibia struggled to 134 for 7 wickets and so Ireland avenged their opening day defeat by the same opponents in the previous qualifying tournament.
Next up for Ireland is Canada at 10am Irish time tomorrow.
