There will be no easy games in this Twenty20 World Cup Qualifying Tournament. Ireland were rudely reminded of this today when failing to chase down 161 posted by an improving Papua New Guinea side.
Gary Wilson who top scored for Ireland with 36 from 26 balls gives credit to the Papua New Guinea side who out-bowled, out-fielded, and out-batted Ireland today.
However, Ireland should be back to full strength when the tournament begins for real. Gary is looking forward to that, and is pleased with his own form as the quest for qualification gets under way on Friday.
Barry Chambers: Garry a pretty disappointing performance, but I suppose it goes to show there are going to be no easy games in this tournament?
Gary Wilson: Yeah definitely, you know I think we're lucky in a way that our upset this year has come in a warm up game. Last year it was Namibia, or last time round it was Namibia. Look obviously we're disappointed. I think Papua New Guinea, credit to them, you know, they out bowled, out fielded and out batted us there. So yeah obviously it's disappointing. But like you say it is only a warm up game, and we're looking forward to get into the tournament proper in a couple of days time.
Barry Chambers: What do you think went wrong today, was it just the positive start they got off to, you were always then on the back foot?
Gary Wilson: To be honest I think it was a good wicket. 160 was a chasable total. We just lost our way a little bit with the bat. And I do agree that we should be beating teams like Papua New Guinea, with all due respect to them, under 160, although they played very well. We spoke about the length we bowled and we perhaps felt that they were a little full at times, and whenever we were back of a length, it was perhaps slightly harder to score. You know there were some positives as well. People got a bit of time in the middle. And like I say, we're really looking forward now to the tournament starting proper against Namibia in a couple of days.
Barry Chambers: And obviously the change bowlers that came in just maybe found it a wee bit difficult there?
Gary Wilson: Yeah, look it's only one game as well, you know Stuart Thompson has bowled very very well until today, whenever he just got his length a little bit wrong. And he's going to have a big part to play in this tournament, I've got no doubt. You know back to back games, I think we play three games, a day off, and three games again. So you know, it's going to be very difficult to keep everyone on the park at all times. So I think `Thommo' has got a big part to play in this tournament, like I do for the whole squad. I think Andy McBrine, whenever wickets get slower and lower and perhaps take a little bit more spin, then he comes into it as well. So look those guys will gain experience from playing today as well. So yeah I think they'll be ready if called upon, certainly during the tournament.
Barry Chambers: And your own form, you seemed to be batting pretty steadily, a good knock today?
Gary Wilson: Yeah I'm happy with the way I'm hitting the ball. It always takes me a little while to get used to conditions out here. It's no secret really that I prefer the ball coming onto the bat. So you know with the slower wickets it takes me a little bit more time. But I feel like I'm hitting the ball pretty well now. And I'm comfortable the way I go about my 20/20 Cricket. And as I say looking forward to the real tournament beginning in a couple of days.
