Promoted team Denmark have opened the ICC Europe Under-19 Championship with a win over Guernsey at Kampong in Utrecht today.

Denmark batted first after winning the toss, and the opening pair of Mads Henriksen and Anders Bulow put on 41 for the opening wicket before both fell in quick succession. Mati Malik then led the way for the rest of the innings, sharing first in a 93 run partnership for the third wicket with captain Raja Basit Javed.

Javed was dismissed for 40 and Malik then put on 58 for the fourth wicket with Saif Ahmad, who made 33 before he became the second of three victims for Matthew Stokes. Malik went on to score an unbeaten 73, taking Denmark's total to 220-5 from their 50 overs.

Guernsey's innings started well with a 74 run opening partnership between Jason Martin and Lucas Barker, which ended when Martin was out for 25. Barker went on to score 55 before he was the second batsman dismissed with the score on 90.

Oliver Nightingale and Matthew Stokes went on to put on 45 for the fifth wicket, but that wicket sparked a collapse and Guernsey went from 156-4 to 178 all out, losing by 42 runs. Aqeel Amjad was the pick of the Danish bowlers with 4-27.

Denmark will play Scotland tomorrow, whilst Guernsey will play their old rivals Jersey. With both Channel Island sides having lost their opening game, the match will be just as competitive as it is whenever the two sides meet as they look to get off the mark in the tournament.
