Scotland's Under 19s got their World Cup qualifying campaign off to a winning start thanks to a solid batting performance against their Jersey counterparts at Voorburg.

Half centuries from Michael English, Ross McLean and Zander Muir saw Scotland post a challenging 258 for 6 in their 50 overs, taking full advantage of the batsman friendly conditions in sweltering temperatures.

James Duckett (3-49) got an early breakthrough for the Islanders when he bowled Andrew Umeed (6), but a batting masterclass between skipper McLean and English followed.

The pair shared a second wicket stand of 155 to put their team firmly in the driving seat. English top scored with 77 from 118 balls (5 fours, 1 six) while McLean showed excellent technique and shot selection in his 67.

Zander Muir provided the innings with late impetus striking six boundaries in his unbeaten half century which took just 35 deliveries.

James Duckett (3-49) was the most successful of the Jersey attack, while Paul McCafferty (2-45) also impressed.

Chayank Gosain (2-26) removed both Jersey openers in quick succession, and when Nick Farrar also accounted for McCafftery, Jersey were in disarray at 35 for 3.

Jonty Jenner and Callum Rabet set about the rebuilding process, and their fourth wicket partenrship of 95 brought the game right back into the balance at 130 for 3 with 20 overs remaining.

However a sharp piece of fielding by Kyle Stirling and Alex Baum accounted for Rabet, whose well played 45 came from 69 balls (5 fours).

Jenner followed just three runs later, his fifty taking 64 deliveries and containing five powerfully struck boundaries.

Gavin Main (3-43) and Michael English (2-32) ripped through the fragile Jersey middle and late order, and despite the best efforts of Alex Cooke (37) Scotland ran out relatively comfortable 50 run winners.

Scotland face Netherlands tomorrow (SAT) in a game which will go a long way to determining who will gain the solitary qualification slot on offer.
