It's been a while since my last blog but I have been off spending my Masters winnings after Adam Scott clinched that dramatic win at the Masters. Hope you defied sense and listened to me by backing him…. What a great event the Masters is - it always produces drama and the quality these pro's can produce under such pressure is simply outstanding. The saying that nice guys finish second has always been attached to Adam Scott but in this case he defied this - he is a great champion and not many golfers get the admiration he received from his peers - so well done to him.
Now onto the cricket … Scottish club cricket is now in full swing and we have had a full round of Scottish Cup fixtures and 5 rounds of CSL league cricket. I have been asked to preview the various leagues and I predict a win for Aberdeenshire for the East Premier league. I played against them in a Scottish Cup fixture and was very impressed. They have recruited well over the winter and had one of the best club seam attacks I have seen for a long time. They will be challenged by Grange, Arbroath and Carlton but the fact they will not suffer from Scottish call up's and the strength of their seam attack I see them as the ones to lift the trophy.
The division below doesn't appear to be that open an affair and I think my old pals at Forfarshire, despite an unlikely defeat last week, will take this title comfortably and return back to the league they should be operating in. My current club Glenrothes got off to a great start in their 1st CSL fixture by defeating Penicuik in a very tight game and have continued with wins against Corstorphine, Dundee HSFP and most recently West Lothian - initially we were looking at hoping to crack a mid table spot but perhaps we should readjust expectations and aim higher.
One observation I have made this year is that there is a huge gap between teams in the top tier and teams in the second tier in both East and West competitions and I really therefore have to query the merit of the Scottish Cup. This is only my opinion and I hope my team mates at Glenrothes forgive me for this but given that there were so many mismatches I truly believe Cricket Scotland should use those Saturdays to develop their Pro Series.
By playing midweek fixtures they alienate experienced club cricketers who might not play for Scotland but would certainly strengthen this competition and make it a much better test for current Scottish players. I would then return the Scottish Cup to its original format and make it a knock out competition and I would maybe grow the Murgtroyd 20/20 competition to let club cricketers still have a competitive game on the days they might be missing their star players…. This will no doubt spark a healthy debate but a strong Pro Series completion means a stronger Scotland squad.
The Scottish National team have also got their season off to a start - albeit not the winning start we had all hoped for. We have recently just welcomed the Pakistan team to Edinburgh and I genuinely thought we had a chance to turn them over. It was cold and the Pakistanis' were playing their 1st competitive fixture after a lengthy lay off and with all our county stars back we had a great opportunity.
Unfortunately it wasn't to be as our betters squandered a decent opportunity win. What is interesting in my eyes was Richie Berrington batting at 7 - he is a match winner and has already proved this with his 100 against Bangladesh - if Scotland are going to turn over international teams he and Kyle need to be at the crease for a long periods. The other player I think who has international quality is Freddie Coleman - he demonstrated his class with a well played 60 against Essex and I think now we just need to play him, back him and he will deliver.
Look at Paul Stirling from Ireland - when he first started he was very hit and miss but now he has produced 2 fine centuries against Pakistan and he is a fantastic young batter who will make lots of runs for Ireland. Freddie is class and we just need to back him and give him a long run. At this point it is worth saying congratulations to Gordon Drummond who selflessly stood down for the progression of the team. Drummo led Scotland through a difficult transition period and he did so brilliantly. He maximised what talent he had and led the team with distinction - congratulations Meigle Eagle and hopefully you can continue to focus on your own game now and continue delivering with the ball.
The YB40 competition hasn't quite gone to plan and I see that Cricket Scotland have done the sensible thing by not making these cap fixtures - this will allow head coach Steindl to try different young players, but is definitely worth noting that despite the fact these are all full time cricketers we are still not getting the consistency we need to compete - this generally comes with age and experience so fingers crossed as they play more at this level Peter will get this consistency from his players.
