After two defeats in the opening two matches, it was all looking over for Nepal's dreams of reaching the 2015 World Cup. But they bounced back in fine style and went into the last day of the round robin stage with a sniff of a chance at reaaching the World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand next year.
It still all needed to go right for them on the last day though - they needed to beat Italy comprehensively, and then hope that Bermuda beat the USA - but not by too much - to lift their Net Run Rate above that of the USA and Bermuda.
Step one was completed with a thumping win over Italy at St David's Cricket Club. They bowled superbly to restrict the Italians to 127-9 from their 50 overs, Sanjam Regmi and Rahul Vishwakarma both taking three wickets. The opening pair of Subash Khakurel and Pradeep Airee put on 87 for the first wicket and Nepal didn't look back from there.
Khakurel scored 47 from 35 balls, whilst Airee stayed in after the partnership ended to guide his team to an 8 wicket win in 14.5 overs, scoring an unbeaten 42. Nepal then had to wait for news from the Bermuda v USA match at the National Stadium in Hamilton.
In that match, the USA batted first after winning the toss, with Steven Taylor and Akeem Dodson opening the batting. Taylor coud only manage 9, but Dodson stayed in to score 50. After he was dismissed, Neil McGarrell came in to score an unbeaten 45 from 43 balls, but they were the only two significant scores in the USA total of 220-9 from their 50 overs.
When the second over of the Bermuda reply, bowled by Elmore Hutchinson, went for 20, the USA would have known they'd be in for a fight. Chris Douglas led the way with 89 from 75 balls, and Janeiro Tucker took the home side over the line with 37 from 24 balls to help secure a five wicket win for Bermuda.
When the net run rate calculations were done, the results had indeed gone the way of Nepal, and they had secured a place in the World Cup Qualifier along with Uganda.
In the other match of the day, Oman beat the already promoted Uganda by 7 wickets thanks to an unbeaten 69 from Zeeshan Siddiqui. However, Bermuda's win over the USA meant that surprise win wasn't enough to prevent Oman joining Italy in being relegated to Division Four.
