Going into the final round of round robin matches in Botswana, it was looking like Fiji were all set to join their East Asia Pacific regional rivals in Division Six in Jersey later this year.
But Nigeria had other ideas. Batting first after Germany won the toss, Nigeria lost their first wicket in the third over with just nine on the board, but recovered with a 83 run partnership for the second wicket which ended when Endurance Ofem was bowled for 31.
Opener Ademola Onikoyi was eventually out for 73, scored from 66 balls, whilst Ricky Sharma also contributed well with an unbeaten 60. It was Oluseye Olympio who really increased the scoring rate though, smashing 52 from 22 balls to help take Nigeria to 308-7 from their 50 overs.
The target was way out of reach for Germany and they were bowled out for 148 to lose by 160 runs. Dilshan Rajudeen was the only batsman to get a start, scoring 30, whilst Joshua Ogunlola was the pick of the Nigerian bowlers with 5-34.
Fiji meanwhile were bowling first after winning the toss against hosts Botswana. Things started badly for the hosts when Faisal Rasheed was caught behind from the first ball of the match, but they recovered to post 198 before being bowled out.
In reply, Fiji soon found themselves struggling on 16-4. Kitiano Tavo tried to stage a recovery by scoring an unbeaten 62 but it wasn't enough and they were bowled out for 176 to lose by 22 runs. When the net run rate calculations were done, Fiji found themselves just nudged out of the promotion spots by Nigeria. Five more runs in the Fijian reply and they'd have been promoted to WCL6.
In the other game of the day, Ghana batted first against Vanuatu and were bowled out for 115, Appolinaire Stephen taking 6-30. Vanuatu cruised to victory in 22.1 overs, winning by 8 wickets, Trevor Langa top scoring with 54.
Today will see Vanuatu and Nigeria face off in the final, whilst Botswana play Fiji in the third place play-off and Germany play Ghana in the fifth place play-off.
