The second day of WCL Division 7 saw the two East Asia Pacific sides both record a second win, whilst Nigeria picked up their first win of the tournament.
Fiji had the biggest win of the day with a thumping win over Germany at the Lobatse Cricket Ground. Batting first after winning the toss, they lost their first wicket with just one run on the board in the first over, before recovering thanks to a second wicket partnership of 58 between Sevunivola Baba and Jikoi Kida.
The partnership ended when Baba was caught behind having contributed just six to the partnership, and his dismissal was swiftly followed by two more within the next eight balls, and Fiji found themselves briefly on the back foot.
Fiji were 98-6 when Joji Bulabalavu was stumped from the first ball of the 30th over, but their innings was put back on track with a 94 run partnership for the seventh wicket between Sekove Ravoka and Kitiano Tavo, which ended when Tavo was dismissed for 49. Ravoka departed soon after having scored 58, before the ninth wicket put on an unbroken 38 to take the Fijian total to 232-8.
The target was never in reach for Germany, and only two of their batsman reached double figures. Iniasi Cakacaka was the pick of the bowlers with 4-15 as the Germans were bowled out for 69, losing by 163 runs.
Over at the secondary ground of the BCA Oval in Gaborone, Fiji's EAP rivals Vanuatu were put into bat by the hosts. They managed to make 265-8 from their 50 overs, Nalin Nipiko top scoring with 82 at exactly a run a ball. Nabil Master was the pick of the bowlers with 3-44.
Botswana's reply got off to the worst possible start when Faisal Rasheed was caught behind from the first ball of the innings. They did recover though, and came close to Vanuatu's total, being restricted to 242-8 from 50 overs, Waseem Tajbhay top scoring with 64. Nalin Nipiko completed a good all-round performance with 3-22 as Vanuatu recorded a 23 run win.
Next door at the main ground of the BCA Oval, Ghana chose to bat first against Nigeria after winning the toss. James Vifah top scored with 41 as they put on 254-9 in their 50 overs.
Star of the show in the Nigerian reply was Dotun Olatunji, who scored the tournament's first century, making 127 from 105 balls as Nigeria won by six wickets in 44.1 overs. Olatuni's innings was the highest WCL score since the last tournament in Botswana in May 2011.
Tomorrow is a rest day in Botswana, and the tournament will resume on Tuesday with the big game of the day being the contest between the two unbeaten sides, Fiji and Vanuatu. In other matches Botswana will play Nigeria and Germany will play Ghana.
