Guernsey travel to Singapore as winner of Division 6 in Malaysia last September but that doesn't mean the team will be rest on its laurels says captain Stuart Le Prevost ahead of WCL Div. 5 which begins on 18 February.
"We've been training hard this winter at the indoor facility in Guernsey and ahead of our arrival in Singapore we would have played two warm-up fixtures in the UAE - one against a Sharjah XI and one against a UAE 2nd XI which I think will stand us in good stead. The conditions in the UAE aren't quite as humid as Singapore but they will definitely help us to prepare," said Le Prevost.
Le Prevost is confident of knowing the conditions in Singapore: "We've played in Singapore in 2009 for WCL Div. 6 and obviously we recently played in Malaysia where the conditions were similar to Singapore. I expect the tracks to be a bit faster in Singapore but at the same time I also expect it to be fairly hot and humid."
Le Prevost admits that the three-time ICC Player of the Tournament Jeremy Frith Is key to the side's performance in Singapore: "It's great having someone like Jeremy Frith in the side, who is truly a lynchpin of the side. He is huge for us batting at number three and couple that with the 10 overs that he bowls it makes him an integral part of our squad. He's not been well leading into this tournament but our physio's been looking after him and I'm confident he will be fighting fit in Singapore."
"There is pressure on the team since we won in Malaysia but at the same time it's a boost since we're the champions from Division 6. We need to play well throughout the week to maintain the advantage," admitted the 34-year-old.
"We lost Tim Duke which is a blow, as he came into the side as a replacement for the injured Lee Savident. Bringing in former captain Andy Biggins who has a wealth of experience is something I'm happy about - he looks after himself and doesn't need babysitting when it comes to being on tour and if anything he offers a great sounding board and mentoring role to the younger members of the squad.
"Losing Lee is a blow to the side, he is a great opener with both bat and ball, but his unavailability due to injury offers a great chance for the younger members of our squad to try and stake a claim to his position in the side," said the batsman about the inclusion of former captain Biggins in the squad.
The team travelling has plenty of youth and experience and Le Prevost hopes they are all pushing their way in for selection on match days: "There's lots of young talent in this squad and I'm confident they are all pushing for the final XI. Everyone is fighting fit and they all deserve to be in the squad, but if I had to pick one player to look out for I think I'd have to say Tim Ravenscroft as a player who will hopefully do well in Singapore."
