IRELAND blew away Canada for 37 in Limavady today, virtually guaranteeing the Under 19s a place at the World Cup in Australia next summer.
It was a devastating display of quality fast bowling in conditions helpful to the seam attack.
From the first ball of the game - when Shane Getkate trapped Akash Shah -- the Canucks were on the back foot. With clouds overhead the ball swung, but the pitch was not to blame for the pitiful score.
Canada were reeling when Graeme McCarter took a brilliant hat-trick to leave them on 10 for 5.
The Gloucestershire apprentice returned figures of 10-5-8-5 to claim the man of the match award.
Getkate showed some of his old verve in taking 4-21 as George Dockrell looked to his two openers to bowl their 10 off the reel.
They were 31-9 at that stage, and the skipper took the last wicket six overs later.
Ireland's misfiring top order also struggled, and at 22 for 5 the Canadians thought they had a chance.
Getkate and Adam Coughlan calmed home nerves, however, and the big North County man finished top scorer in the match with an unbeaten 10.
The thrashing ensured Ireland greatly improved their net run rate, and with Scotland beating Afghanistan narrowly the Irish are now comfortably on top.
Ireland play Nepal and Namibia this weekend and finish off against Papua New Guinea on Tuesday.
