Ryan Watson stroked a half-century to help Caledonian Highlanders clinch a tense two-wicket win against Western Warriors.

Former Saltires skipper Watson was easily the top batsman in a low-scoring Regional Series clash at Titwood.

Chasing the Warriors 174, Watson and current Scotland captain Gavin Hamilton posted 91 for the first wicket as the old guard upstaged a string of young pretenders.

Watson played the lead role, hitting seven boundaries in his 58-ball 52 while Hamilton faced 77 deliveries for his dogged 37.

However, Moneeb Iqbal removed both openers to spark an astonishing collapse which saw the Highlanders lose six wickets for 29 runs.

Kevin McLaren piled on the pressure with three middle order scalps before the Highlanders clinched a dramatic victory with just one ball to spare.

Earlier a succession of Warriors batsmen made it into double figures but none played a major innings in tricky conditions.

Skipper Qasim Sheikh top-scored with 26 while Willie Rowan made an unbeaten 25 late on.

Aberdeenshires Tyler Buchan and Craig Ramsay of Arbroath each claimed two wickets.

Yesterdays match was the final chance for cap hopefuls to catch the eye of the selectors ahead of the Saltires opening Pro40 clash with Leicestershire on May 16.
