Aimee Maguire took a wicket on her 18th birthday in Belfast  but that was all Ireland had to celebrate as they were blown away by England in the second one-day international to lose the series 2-0 with one to play.

After the Girls in Green had put up a credible performance in Saturday’s opening match — going down by four wickets — they suffered a day to forget at Stormont replying to England’s 320-8 with a record low score of 45 all out in 16.5 overs.

Coach Ed Joyce has said many times that his ‘playing with no fear’ philosophy will mean Ireland will have ups and downs, but the 275-run margin of defeat will have hurt after opener Tammy Beaumont carried her bat for 150 not out.

“Today was obviously a down day,” skipper Gaby Lewis said. “We’re a young squad, and we’ll look to learn from our mistakes, but sometimes you just have to take you’re hat off and say well played [to the opposition].”

The Ireland attack started well with Orla Prendergast bowling two maidens and Arlene Kelly only conceding 11 from her first five overs but Beaumont proved immovable, reaching her century from 117 balls and then smashing 48 from her next 22.

Left-arm spinner Maguire trimmed Maddy Villers’ bails to mark her big day, and opener Una Raymond-Hoey offered some resistance with the bat making 22 but no-one else managed double figures.
