STRABANE IMPRESS IN WIN AT GLENDERMOTT

There’s no doubting the quality at Strabane, and they showed their promotion credentials with a fine win at Glendermott.

“We put in a good all-round performance in all aspects of the game and we stuck to the basic plans and thankfully we came out on top,’ said Aaron Gillespie. “We were put on the back foot early on as Ben Mills showed just how good form he is currently in as he threatened to go big but once we got that wicket we contained nicely and kept it to a very gettable score.”

The game featured an incredible catch by Gillespie, a flying effort at first slip to account for Barry Scott – the video clip of which has gone viral.

“It’s probably the best catch I’ve ever taken, but I was lucky enough to have seen it the whole way and it's just one of those ones where you make an effort and hope it sticks and luckily it did. We’re fortunate that the world of club cricket is progressing with the access to live streaming games which allows the potential of catching (pardon the pun) clips like these amongst others.”

Gillespie hasn’t scored the volume of runs of previous seasons, but feels he is coming back into form in recent weeks.

“Personally, the season hasn’t started the way I would have liked to. I’ve come in a little under-prepared than other years but it’s slowly getting there. I’ve had a few starts in the last weeks so I’m looking to push on those and start converting into bigger scores which I know will come.

“We have a young team and there is a lot of potential going forward. With John Mooney on-board we can only go in the one direction. His presence alone within the team has been incredible and everyone is eager to learn and have the chance to work with a guy of his calibre and it is something not to take for granted.

“I think the goal is the same as all teams is that some silverware would be great although we are only six weeks into the season. It is still pretty early to think ahead of things, but we just have to keep putting ourselves into good positions and take one step at a time and hopefully success will follow if we keep doing the right things.”
