JUST WHAT THE DOC ORDERED

The Dougherty name has become synonymous with the wicket-keeping role at Donemana with Billy the latest in the family dynasty to wear the gloves. Following in the footsteps of the legendary Ivor, Richard, and Ricky-Lee, Billy Dougherty has big shoes – or to be more exact, gloves to fill.

However, the 25 year-old has settled well into the pivotal position, with his form behind the stumps one of the reasons that the famous Tyrone club has started the current campaign so well. They are joint-top of the Premiership, lead their T20 Group and face Glendermott on Saturday for a Senior Cup semi-final berth.

“We’ve definitely had a good start to the season with a lot of the side contributing at different times,” Dougherty told The Chronicle.

“Hopefully that will continue as the season goes on, and if we get our full side out every week, we shouldn’t be too far away when the silverware is given out.”

Dougherty is one of the three brothers currently in the first XI, along with opener DJ and all-rounder Levi. He doesn’t feel too weighed down by any pressure associated with the family name, having established himself over the past few years.

“I’ve been involved with the seniors now long enough, having gained plenty of experience along the way. I don’t feel any real pressure now. I’ve learnt so much over the years firstly from my dad, then Ricky-Lee in more recent times. Both did very well for the club over a long time.”

Billy has already collected one senior cup medal, courtesy of a 14-run win over Brigade in the 2020 final, and would dearly love to add a second this time around.

“I think 100% the Senior Cup is the medal most of us would choose if given a choice of a trophy. It’s just a special two days with a great atmosphere and buzz all around the region. It would be great to have it back at The Holm, but there is a lot of work to be done, starting with Glendermott on Saturday. I’m sure it won’t be an easy game there at The Rectory, but if we turn up and play the type of cricket that we can, we won’t be far away.”

The availability of Irish international Andy McBrine has been a real bonus for Donemana this season, and Dougherty is quick to pay tribute to the impact that ‘Scra’ has on the whole team.

“He has made a huge difference to our fortunes. He just has so much experience and keeps everyone right on the field. He really is a big player for us.”
