Nigeria are the only associate side to leave the African Games with a women's cricket medal after beating Uganda in the bronze medal match in Ghana today.
The match was a low scoring one with Nigeria putting Uganda into bat and restricting them to 76-8, Peculiar Agboya taking 3-11 from her four overs.
Salome Sunday then top scored in the Nigerian run chase with 37, with the Nigerian side chasing down their runs with four balls to spare to win by three wickets.
The gold medal game later in the day was between the full member sides of Zimbabwe and South Africa. In a thrilling encounter that went to a Super Over, Zimbabwe took home the first ever African Games cricket gold medal.
All in all, it was a successful first staging of a cricket tournament at the African Games. Once again, it showed the rising standards of women's cricket in the region and continued to show up the ICC's decision to prevent any African associate members being able to qualify for the next women's 50-over World Cup.
The men's tournament begins on Sunday. Rwanda will not be involved in the men's tournament with hosts Ghana playing instead. All other teams will be the same as the women's tournament.
