Ireland Women crashed to a shock 40 runs defeat by Scotland in the first one-day international in Desert Springs.
Despite hitting only 13 boundaries, the Scots, on their ODI debut, totalled 211, with the help of 26 wides, and then a below-par batting performance, capped by two horrible run outs, saw Ireland bowled out in only the 42nd over.
Freya Sargent, the 17-year-old off spinner. made her ODI debut and was one of four Ireland bowlers to take two wickets but a target of just over four runs an over should have been comfortable for this strong Irish batting line-up.
But the top four were all trapped leg before, including Amy Hunter for 10 and skipper Laura Delany first ball, and then Orla Prendergast, on 37, was run out when stranded in the middle of the pitch with Rebecca Stokell after they had changed their minds about four times!
When Cara Murray came back for a non-existent second, Ireland had slumped to 162 for nine and it was all over shortly afterwards. The second of the three ODIs is tomorrow.
Meanwhile, it was also a bad day for the Ireland Academy side at the European (T10) Championships in Malaga as they lost by four wickets to the Netherlands XI.
Seamus Lynch hit 44 off 13 balls and Gavin Hoey 28 off six but the Irish side could manage only 122 for nine. Captain Sam Harbinson took three wickets but the Dutch eased home with nine balls to spare. Ireland’s only game today is against Jersey at 8.30am.
