The first Asian Games cricket tournament since the 2014 games got underway yesterday in China with the four lowest ranked teams playing off for three places in the quarter finals alongside the region's four full members and Thailand, who are all seeded at that stage.
Indonesia's place was secured with a dominant win over Mongolia - making their international debut - in the tournament's opening contest. Put into bat they scored 187-4, with Ni Luh Dewi's 62 their top score and 49 extras conceded by Mongolia not too far behind. The inexperienced Mongolian's were then bowled out for only 15 to lose by 172 runs with Andriani Andriani taking 4-8.
The afternoon game between Malaysia and Hong Kong was a much more competitive game. Malaysia were put into bat and scored 104-9 from their 20 overs, Betty Chan taking 3-12. Hong Kong, the closest thing to a home team in the tournament as China have strangely opted not to send teams, responded with 82, losing their last wicket from the final delivery of the game, and lost by 22 runs.
The losing sides from those two games then met earlier today for the final quarter final spot. Hong Kong were put into bat and racked up 202-4 - their highest T20I total - with captain Kary Chan top scoring with 70 from only 39 balls. There was improvement of sorts for Mongolia, but they were still bowled out for a low socre, this time 22, and lost by 180 runs.
The four full members from the region - Afghanistan infamously not having a women's team - were seeded in the quarter finals and were drawn randomly against one of the four associates. The quarter finals start tomorrow with Malaysia taking on India in the morning and Indonesia playing Pakistan in the afternoon. Play will continue on Friday with Thailand facing off against Sri Lanka - a team they hold a win over - before the stage concludes with a contest between Hong Kong and Bangladesh.
