Waringstown won the T20 cup for a seventh time as Graham Hume smashed the penultimate ball for six to seal victory over CIYMS in a contest that ebbed and flowed throughout.
This end of season game wasn’t your typical boundary laden T20 encounter, but was nonetheless exciting for it.
Ross Adair top-scored with a 25-ball 32, that included two of the three sixes that the Belmont side managed in their entire innings. He and Chris Dougherty shared an opening stand of 50 approaching the half-way point, but with ‘Doc’ getting bogged down, something had to give.
It was the introduction of spin that proved effective with Player-Coach James Cameron-Dow getting the breakthrough as Dougherty skied a simple catch.
Skipper Greg Thompson bowled the dangerous Ross Adair, but it was Seb Best who caused the most damage with the wickets of Irish international Mark Adair, big-hitting Jason van der Merwe and Theo van Woerkom that prevented CIYMS getting any momentum into their innings.
The triumvirate of spinners had combined figures of six for 62 in their 12 overs as CIYMS ended on what appeared a modest 117 for eight.
However, pace off proved equally as tricky for the home side to navigate and although they kept wickets intact, they were never able to really break ahead in the chase.
James McCollum went cheaply, but Adam Dennison and Morgan Topping were content with a safety-first approach as they took the total to 56 just past the halfway stage.
Both fell in quick succession, but Greg Thompson and Graham Hume edged closer to the target before the skipper fell for 22 with 28 needed from 21 balls.
It all came down to the last over with 11 required and when Tyron Koen kept it to five from the first four balls, his side were favourites.
Hume though proved the hero as he cleared the ropes to earn the win and the Man-of-the-Match accolade.
Thompson paid tribute to his side for clinching their second piece of silverware.
“It’s certainly been a memorable year” said Thompson. “To win the T20 and Challenge Cups, as well as reaching the All-Ireland final is a great achievement for the squad.
“Graham Hume will grab the headlines with that match-winning six off the penultimate ball. He has such great experience under pressure and the quality of his bowling was probably a huge factor in today’s win.
“To have someone like Seby Best to step up and take three wickets in a final – three crucial ones – is very pleasing and good signs for the future.
“It’s been a real team effort with our resources stretched with injuries, and representative call-ups. It’s great to get our just rewards for the efforts that everybody has put in.”
