Waringstown, the most successful team in the Irish Senior Cup, made light of their opening assignment in pursuit of their seventh trophy, with a resounding victory over North West Premiership champions Newbuildings.

The match of the round lasted only 43.5 overs as the hosts were skittled out for 98 and Adam Dennison and Ross Waite saw the Villagers home by nine wickets in the 17^th over.

Seb Best came on as Waringstown’s fifth bowler and wrapped up the innings with three of the last four wickets but Pat Botha, Ben Snell and skipper Greg Thompson also took two wickets. Johnny Thompson was Newbuildings top scorer and their only wicket-taker.

It was another horror day for North West clubs in a competition they haven’t won since 2004 with not a single winner, although they will have two teams in this week’s draw after the games at Donemana and Ardmore were abandoned without a result.

North Down inflicted a 10 wickets defeat on Eglinton with Alistair Shields and Ani Chore continuing their impressive start to the season with a partnership of 170 in just 26 overs, while Coleraine and Bready lost heavily in Dublin.

Harry Tector brought his international form into the competition with 87 for YMCA against the Bannsiders but Ian Young’s half century was in vain as Railway Union beat Bready by 130 runs.

Brigade had victory in their sights against Pembroke, reducing the home side to 94 for eight in defence of their 151 total but, fatally, they couldn’t dismiss another in-form international Lorcan Tucker who finished 72 not out.

Donemana captain Dwayne McGerrigle continued his phenomenal high and fast scoring with 95 from 72 balls (seven fours, nine sixes) against Carrickfergus but the NCU side’s innings never got started because of rain and they will now host the replay next Sunday. And Ardmore must travel the length of Ireland next week after their home game against Cork County was also washed out just after halfway.

There was a home defeat for Fox Lodge for the second year in a row against The Hills although their total of 151 was 122 more than they managed last season!

Stormont staged most exciting finish of the day but Civil Service North came up six runs short against Leinster.  While home captain Stuart Thompson was in the middle, he was confident of chasing down the Dubliners’ 248, so when he was bowled for 52 at the start of the 44^th over to leave CSN 196 for eight it looked to be game over.

But although Finn Lutton was out three balls later, No 11 Matthew Foster and young James West got the target down to 19 off the last over but despite Foster hitting two more boundaries they could score only 12.

Instonians were the most impressive winners of the day, beating Malahide on their own ground by the huge margin of 123 runs,

The Shaw’s Bridge side were 145 for seven at the start of the 42^nd over but Daniel Rose with 35 and an unbeaten 25 from Cian Robertson got them up to 216 and that momentum was carried on by the bowlers who needed less than 32 overs to bowl out for Malahide for 93, Andrew White four wickets and Daniel Rose had  figures of three for seven.
