The ICC Development Awards celebrate both global and regional winners showcasing the efforts made to grow the sport across the world. The awards include recognition of mass participation programmes, national team performances, digital innovation and social responsibility - where cricket is used to improve communities around the world.
Jersey Cricket has won the regional ICC Digital Fan Engagement of the Year award and subsequently a nomination for the global award for the Fairway Super Series initiative.
Launched for the first time in 2020 the Fairway Super Series is a tournament designed to add another layer to the player pathway for junior cricketers in Jersey.
The tournament itself mimics the modern T20 franchise approach to cricket that millions enjoy worldwide through the IPL, BBL and Vitality Blast. The players, selected through club performances throughout the season, are invited to take part in the tournament, which includes a draft event, full coloured playing kits and men’s national team players as the team coaches. The 4 teams involved are also linked with and named after local charities to add a community feel to the tournament. Players were encouraged to raise money and awareness for their team’s charity throughout the event.
Alongside Jersey Cricket, sponsors Fairway Group engaged with local media company 3Ci International to deliver high quality media content for the draft event, squad announcements and a tournament wrap. Pitchvision technology was also used to capture ball-by-ball footage of games in order to release highlights packages on the tournament social media channels.
Jersey Cricket’s Performance and Development Manager Lee Meloy said ‘our young players are growing up with franchise T20 cricket on TV all year round and we wanted to give them an opportunity to take part in their own experience. In doing so we knew we needed to go the extra yards to ensure it felt and looked exactly that’.
‘The cricket was fast paced and competitive right up to the final ball bowled. The skills on show, in pressure situations, were phenomenal and will no doubt accelerate the development of our junior cricketers. A huge thanks to Fairway Group and all involved in making the initiative become possible’.
Elenor Bouchet, Head of BD, Marketing and Engagement, Fairway Group stated “we’re ecstatic that the efforts of Jersey Cricket have been recognised on an international stage for development”.
“Alongside a number of local providers and charities, we were determined to put on the best possible event for the benefit of the children and make sure that the Fairway Super Series becomes a firm fixture in the calendar to continue the pathway for young girls and boys in Jersey.”
