IRELAND’S Women will be based in Guyana for their group games at the World Twenty20 in November after losing the qualifying Final to Bangladesh yesterday in the Netherlands by 25 runs.
Victory would have based them in the holiday island of St Lucia but despite restricting the Tigresses to 122-9 — Ireland took eight wickets for 42 runs in the last eight overs — the Irish girls were 27-3 in the sixth over and lost three more wickets in 10 balls for just two runs to leave the last wickets needing 68 from the last eight overs.
With Panna Ghoush taking five wickets, Ireland were bowled out in the 19th over to suffer their first defeat of the tournament.
Ulster-born Clare Shillington was named Player of the Tournament and Lucy O’Reilly, who had career-best figures of 4-28 yesterday, finished with 11 wickets in the tournament at an average of just 7.8.
O’Reilly and Gaby Lewis, daughters of former Ireland men’s internationals Peter and Alan, now head to England as part of the ICC Global Development Squad.
