Hosts Malaysia began their WCL Division Four campaign with a win over Uganda today in Kuala Lumpur, but a controversial final over run out was the main talking point.

Earlier, Malaysia had chose to bat first after they won the toss. Openers Virandeep Singh and Anwar Arudin were both out for single digit scores, whilst numbers 3 and 4 - Ahmed Fiaz and Suhan Alagaratnam - provided the backbone to their innings with 50 and 61 respectively.

Rizat Ali Shah was the pick of the bowlers for visitors taking 4-23 as Malaysia were bowled out for 208.

In reply, Uganda were well on the back foot on 102-6 before Deusdedit Muhumuza and Fred Achelam put on 54 for the seventh wicket before the latter was out for 36. Muhumuza carried on, and would eventually figure in the controversial climax.

The lower order continued chipping away at the required runs, reaching 198-8 before Bilal Hassan became the fourth wicket for Muhamad Syahadat in the penultimate over. Then came the controversy.

With ten runs needed from the last over, number 11 Henry Ssenyondo tried to take a single to get Muhumuza - then on 38 - back on strike. Suhan Alagaratnam threw the ball underarm along the stumps, and the bails came off with Muhumuza out of his crease, ending the innings.

Upon being given out, Muhumuza threw his bat across the pitch. Video footage viewed by those at the ground, including Cricinfo correspondent Peter Della Penna showed that the ball never hit the stumps, the bails instead being dislodged by wicketkeeper Shafiq Sharif.

Whilst the controversial ending spoiled what was looking like an exciting chase by the Ugandans, in truth the poor batting by their top over cost them even more. The Ugandans will look to bounce back tomorrow when they play Bermuda, whilst the hosts will come up against Vanuatu.
