Carrying through no points to the Super Six stage after a poor performance in the first round, Afghanistan needed to start the Super Six stage with a bang today. And they did just that with a three wicket win over the West Indies.

West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and chose to bat first, their inning starting badly when the 16 year old leg-spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman bowled Chris Gayle for 1 with a googly. A fourth wicket partnership of 55 between Marlon Samuels and Shai Hope was the only partnership of note for the tournament top seeds though.

That partnership ended when Samuels was out for 36, whilst Hope batted on to score 43, the top score for the West Indies. The Afghans let them off the hook a little, allowing the ninth wicket pairing of Ashley Nurse and Keemo Paul to put on an unbroken 28, but the West Indian total of 197-8 was below par nonetheless.

Afghanistan started their run chase poorly with openers Mohammad Shahzad and Javed Ahmadi both dismissed cheaply leaving them on 17-2. Rahmat Shah took control, sharing in a third wicket partnership of 66 for the third wicket with Samiullah Shenwari and a 49 run partnership for the fourth wicket with Mohammad Nabi.

Shah was the next man out having scored 68, the top score for the Afghans. At 168-6, it was far from a sure thing, but the lower order held on to chase down their target in 47.4 overs to win by three wickets.

Afghanistan's next match will be on Tuesday against the UAE - a team that has often been their achilles heel in 50 over cricket, whilst the West Indies will next be in action on Monday against Zimbabwe.
