Peter Borren's decision at the toss to ask the Windies to bat first may have been influenced by the weather forecast as much as the thought that he could make inroads with the ball.
Whichever the case Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis tucked into the Dutch attack in an opening partnership of 85 reached inside the ninth over.
With Gayle gone for 46 (31 balls 2x4, 5x6) and Hetmyer failing it was left to Lewis (84), Marlon Samuels (73*) and a late blast from Rovman Powell (52) to carry the Windies to 309/6 off a rain reduced 48 overs.
For the Dutch the six wickets to fall were shared, two wickets each for Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe and Peter Borren.
In reply Wesley Barresi (64) found a partner in Ryan ten Doeschate (67*) after the early loss of Scott Edwards and Ben Cooper.
At 142/2 in the 24th over the Dutch were not out of the game but first Barresi was run out and less than an over later Borren managed to get himself run-out off a Free Hit!
Roelof van der Merwe and Pieter Seelaar fell quickly afterwards and as Seelaar left the field the covers came on for what would be the final time of the day.
Ryan ten Doeschate must have wondered what was going on as he watched any chance the Dutch had disappear in a few chaotic minutes.
With the rain unrelenting the Dutch were 54 runs short of the DLS target for 28.4 overs as the Windies went unbeaten through the Group phase.
The Netherlands miss out on the Super Sixes finishing in 4th place with only a win over PNG in what has been a disappointing campaign for them.
Evin Lewis was named Player of the Match for his 84 and talked after the match:
"I had a good start with Chris and got a good score today. He's our most experienced batsman, so we had to bat as deep as we could (after he got out), and that was my job today. The wicket did not change, it was pretty good for cricket throughout.
We are going to play the Super Six now, hopefully we can keep ticking."
