Nepal made a habit of last over wins at Division Two of the World Cricket League as they secured their spot in the World Cup Qualifier, and they continued that habit today with a last over win over fellow WCL2 finalists the United Arab Emirates today in Kwekwe as the two sides warmed up for the World Cup Qualifier which starts on Sunday.
The game was reduced to a 29 over contest before play started, with UAE batting first after captain Rohan Mustafa won the toss. The skipper fell early doors, before a 66 run second wicket partnership between Ashfaq Ahmed and Ghulam Shabber got them back on track.
The partnership ended when Shabber was out for 32, whilst Ahmed scored 42 before he was the fourth man out, with the UAE total on 90. At 98-5 after 21 overs, the UAE were looking set for a low total before Muhammad Usman and Adnan Mufti scored 67 from the next 6.2 overs.
Their wickets came in a clatter towards the end though, as the UAE lost their last five wickets for just six runs in 10 balls, their final score being 171 from 28.5 overs. Lalit Bhandari, who didn't play in WCL2, was the pick of the bowlers with 4-40, Karan KC also chipping in with 3-38.
Nepal lost their first three wickets for low scores, with Paras Khadka the sole member of the top four to make a significant contribution with his 28. His wicket didn't bring about a collapse as it has the tendency to though, with Sharad Vesawkar and Dipendra Singh Airee putting on 57 for the fifth wicket before the latter was out for 41, scored from 32 balls.
Vesawkar and incoming batsman Aarif Sheikh held the chase together from there, guiding their team home to a five wicket win with four balls to spare thanks to an unbroken 46 run partnership. Vesawkar finished not out on 41.
Both teams will play their final warm-up matches on Thursday. The United Arab Emirates will play the West Indies, whilst Nepal will play Hong Kong, in an unusual situation of warm-up games being between two teams in the same tournament group.
